Starting a beginner right

By HistoryGuy, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have a friend who is interested in X-Wing and wants to learn. Which core set should I use to teach him? Or should I combine the two? The other way I could do it would just be to use one Z-95 and one TIE.

1. Old Core Set

2. New Core Set

3. Combination of both

4. Z-95 vs. TIE Fighter

What do you think the best option is?

Either core set using missions.

Once they've got a mission under their belt, let them loose on both core sets. That's how I learned.

I try to start on the new core set, because that is the most readily available now. Play the intro scenario from the learn to play guide, then escalate to a 60 point squadron, then 90, and 100. try to design the squads in advance so that each new game incorporates a different thing, so maybe the 60 point game incorporates secondary weapons and named pilots with abilities, then the 90 point game incorporates modifications and pilot upgrades. That way you get sort of a crawl, walk, run training method in the game. It keeps the new player from being overwhelmed and keeps the game fresh even if they are losing badly. I also find that sometimes it is best to pretend you don't know exactly how to play so that maybe you joust with a ship that shouldn't really joust. and the like. I'm not exactly saying let them win, but use the opportunity to try things that wouldn't necessarily be something you do in a tournament.
