Bombers Shield Bypass?

By HornyPlatypus, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Hey there! Me and a friend just played our first couple games of Armada and were able to find clarifications on all but one rule. In regards to squadrons with the "bomber" ability. If you are attacking a ship and you role a crit, does it bypass the shields of the ship and do a direct crit. I mean In the SW universe the torpedus's go through the shields (I think).

The way we have been playing is lets say I have an Xwing that attacks a ship with 2 shields on all sides. I attack a side and roll a crit. We drop the shield to 1 on one side and the other hull points stay at 2. And we also deal a face up damage card to the ship. Is this right?

On side note: how the hell am I supposed to get the front of a star destroyer to point at something before it flanks me???

Thanks.

No, Bombers apply damage as normal.

The only difference is that Bombers count critical dice face as 1 damage (against ships) and can resolve critical effects (the default effect; the first damage card taken is face up.)

If the opponent doesn't take any damage cards, then they don't take any face up, and they only take one face up if the attacker rolled a crit result.

If the defender has two shields, and a Bomber deals one damage then the attacker just loses one shield.

Go slow, and use Navigate commands.

DerErlkoenig is correct.

Ordinarily, you completely ignore the Critical Symbol in relation to squadrons... Either when you shoot at them, or when they shoot at you... Only the "Hit" Symbol counts for a ****.

However, with Bomber , all it is doing is making the Critical Count again... Both as a "Damage Point", and granting you the ability to resolve a critical effect - Just Like a Ship when Shooting at Another Ship .

At this point in time , the only critical effect they can use is the default one of "The First Damage card is Dealt Face Up"... Which of course, means you need to be dealing damage cards to the hull for it to count...

But I am convinced that a forthcoming "Squadron Admiral" will add another Critical Effect that Squadrons with Bomber will be able to utilise as a global effect... But that is baseline speculation on my part.

As for it, yes... Don't be at maximum speed just to be at maximum speed. The faster they are approaching you, the slower you want to be. Try to anticipate where they will be going (even if you need to spend some time on your own with a maneuver tool and see where options are) - because remember, they're generally going to want to try to aim for where you will be in a bad position and they will be able to shoot you... Navigation commands are a great way to swing your nose around... But you also want to discourage where they're going to want to go... Flying down the flank of an ISD with a Corvette to get out of its Nose Arc is a great idea.... Until you realise you're flying INTO the nose arc of a Victory Star Destroyer that was hanging back a little bit......

Alright, thanks for the info.

Luke Skywalker's special ability is that he treats ships as not having shields when he attacks. This may have been what you were thinking of.
