Tournament Question - Drops from the Top 8 (or any top cut)

By Luethar, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Yesterday I attended a fantastic store championship. We had 5 rounds. At the end of the 5 rounds we had a cut to the top 8. Prior to the top 8 being sorted #7 dropped. The TO recalculated the top 8 with number 9. Then another person dropped and they replaced him with number 10.

The tournament rules are pretty silent on how to proceed.

1) should numbers 9 and 10 be allowed to be moved up?

or

2) Should the pairings be made and where people dropped, the opposing player in the top 8 gets a win by forfeit?

In this case the replacement player made it to top 4 then lost.

I am just curious if there should be replacements or if the match should be conceded since it is the Top 8 (or any cut for that matter).

Any TOs or official FFG moderators care to chime in?

Lue.

FFG would replace players that don't show up for thier cuts. They tell players just outside the cut to be prepared to play incase for whatever reason others opt not to.

And FFG mods never reply to threads on here, except (from what I've seen) when they lock it.

If done before play starts they absolutely should be replaced. You're taking the top X and just because someone was in that group it's pretty hard to say they still are if they leave.

Now once play begins I don't think there is anything preventing someone from resigning the game although doing so will surely bring the ire of anyone who didn't make the cut because of that player. At one extreme it is bad form bordering on actual bad sportsmanship but going to the other extreme it could be seen as collusion if someone really wants to bring that mess up.

Just be careful if you choose to drop before the elimination rounds.

At Sacramento Regionals I was 6-0 for 2nd, but because I knew I was not going to play at GenCon, I wanted to give someone else the chance at the win and the bye. I got my dice and ... I think Shield tokens? But I didn't get the templates.

It's kind of a shame. I would have had to play a game (keeping out the 9th player), then (assuming I won), concede the next game (giving someone an undeserved win). Or I would have had to keep playing, even though I was exhausted and had no intention of playing at GenCon.

It was a weird situation.

FFG Moderator - "This discussion is now over." - KERCHUNK! - Locked. :)

The problem with prizes. You are in position to earn a prize but you don't want to finish it out despite getting in. This is the time when I think some level of collusion would be appropriate as staying in for the first elimination game before throwing it is very easy to do. How to throw a game: "Oops, I didn't realize all of my TIE Fighters got set up pointing the wrong way!"
