Can Jan be used on the ship carrying her?

If she is with Kyle in the HwK can Kyle take a focus action and use Jan to get an evade token?

That is correct. I put her on the YT-2400 so Leebo can evade.

Does her rules text say "friendly ship...." Or "another friendly ship...."

A ship is friendly and at range 1 to itself, so the first phrasing allows you to pick yourself, but if it specifies "another friendly ship..." Then you have to luck, well, another friendly ship.

This is a very common question, and comes up in relation to several upgrades and pilots.

The key word you are looking for on all of these cards is "another"

If the card says "you may do xyz to another friendly ship", then it excludes the ship with that ability.

If the card says "you may do xyz to a friendly ship". then it includes the ship with the ability.

Examples:

Howlrunner.

When another friendly ship at Range 1 is attacking with its primary weapon, it may reroll 1 attack die.

Jan Ors (Pilot)

When another friendly ship at Range 1-3 is attacking, if you have no stress tokens, you may receive 1 stress token to allow that ship to roll 1 additional attack die.

Jan Ors (Crew)

Once per round, when a friendly ship at range 1-3 performs a focus action or would be assigned a focus token, you may assign an evade token instead.

Targeting Coordinator

You may spend 1 energy to choose 1 friendly ship at Range 1-2. Acquire a target lock, then assign the blue target lock token to the chosen ship.

This is how I played it when the question came up during a league match. I used that exact example, Kyle's card say "another friendly", Jan's says "a friendly"...
