$40 bucks for an x-wing mat...cmon!

By Gottmituns205, in Star Wars: Armada

I just came back from the LGS that was selling the gaming matt for x-wing for 40 bucks....and apparently they aren't even the right size for Armada.

So what are the options here folks...do I drop 80 bucks on two mats...or is there a better option?

(yes I did think about a black bed sheet.)

I bought a $20 yoga mat (tip from the Armada subredit), which works pretty good. I am fortunate in that the official mats are provided to use on a first come, first serve basis at my FLGS. I ended up breaking down and buying one of the starfield ones, and then will most likely get the Bespin one.

After playing on multiple surfaces (Felt, fabric, etc.) I am pretty spoiled now. I bought the original starfield and death star mats and they are awesome.

I would buy them and not look back. And now there are a few more choices (that Death star 2 mat looks great.)

The yoga mat is definitely the way to go. http://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Direct-Extra-Wide-Black/dp/B007MTWI48

The surface is great, it grips the stands well (better than anything else I've played on, by far), it travels well, and it's like a quarter the price of 2 X-wing mats.

The only drawback is they don't really sell yoga mats with planet pictures on them, if that's your thing. I just got the black and speckled it with white paint from a toothbrush to make a starfield, and it looks great. There's no glare or anything, it's a nice matte black.

Everybody in my area is all buying this yoga mat. I'm pretty sure the seller thinks there's a yoga boom in San Antonio... :)

Fabric only minimally helps. But still good. I use it when I'm being lazy and don't wanna carry a mat. Yoga mats are much cheaper.

The yoga mat that Ardaedhel is talking about seems like a good deal, and they really are pleasant to play on, even if they're not that aesthetically pleasing (to me).

If I didn't already have the mats that I have, I probably would just drop the $80 for the two FFG mats. My FLGS sells them for $50ea, so $40ea doesn't sound that bad to me.

If you really want to cheap out, then instead of a black bedsheet, I'd get black felt. It's what I did when I first got into X-Wing. The downside is that folds stick around and ... if the cat jumps up on your game, you simply need to let him get off at his own pace, because when the claws grab the mat as you pull him off, the game is over.

i bought 6*4 ft of vinyl at fabricville for 30$

FFG Mats at my Local are 40-X

Which means $40 CAD, Multiplied by the US Exchange Rate, which last time I checked, was 1.44

... Plus GST after that.

Sooo, yeah.

+1 for the extra wide yoga mat. Make sure to specify you want it in black.

I got a 60$ mat that works well. Let me try to find out who makes it. Its an awesome mat with a planet and moon in the background.

I have one mat for X Wing, it's a H,D,&C mat... wanna say coolstuff had it for $30.About the same to me as the FFG mats, a few bucks cheaper too.

I play both X Wing and Armada so I went with two mats. Haven't regretted the decision.

I've always been intrested in GripMats, just too cheap to spend money on single use mats (I only play one space tabletop game)...

Why not simply sell an Armada mat for $60 dollars and make everyone happy?

Funnily enough when I see those Yoga matt's I also see "customers also bought x"

The four to choose from are pretty great. They feel nice, and look awesome. 30-35$ was the going rate for decidedly worse mats before FFG announced these. It is kind of pinch to the penny pocket, but dag two of em look really cool together. I think it's worth it.

I'll consider it closer to pay day, I may simply just get one for me and a friend to learn the game on and go from there.....

However...I'd rather a courscant map.

Broke down and brought the gripmat back in oct with a late oct ship date. Then late nov ship. Then got a email shipping end of dec. Then end of jan. Now it looking like mid February.

Not all space is pink/orange/blue and swirly. Most of it is quite black.

I bought a 6' x 4' piece of black cloth for $10, good enough for me, I don't play in tournaments.
