Im Having Fun With Ackbar

By SmurfWedge, in Star Wars: Armada

Really loving Ackbar with a Defiance MC80 at the moment. 2 games and I've managed to pull off an Ackbar Slash twice. Definitely puts the hurt on.

Also loving the Torp MC30 with the Admonition title and Lando. Surprisingly it can take quite a beating due to cancelling dice and rerolls and has the speed to get out of dodge if needs be.

Wave 2 ships are pretty awesome

Real question here, anybody else finding success with doing the actual Ackbar slash? I admit I'm too terrified to do this against Imperials (most of my opponents), since one of those ships will surely be an ISD...

Yep. Love it.

With MC80s and AFMK_IIs

Mostly because doing the whole "let's circle them" essentially keeps you exposed to their Front arc for 4-5 turns of the Game.

A Slash, if you can time and execute it (and having them bunch up is both a boon and a hassle) means that you're often exposed to the front arc for 1-2 turns, and then you're dealing with Sides and such.

Both of my slashes were between a VSD1 and ISD2. The MC80 can take a bit of punishment due to the decent shields.

Dunno, but I'd rather take 4-5 Front arc long distance shots over going in and taking 2 turns of medium-short-range shots, possibly with double-arc.

The other side of it is you can force one double arc shot on one of your ships, rather than Gunnery Team Front Arc shots to two.

It is very situational... In both directions.

True, and I guess an MC80 out of all ships should be able to take one of those.

I'm having a small problem with Ackbar and gunnery teams, in that I keep winding up with double arc shots on my best target. A good problem to have, I know, but it makes me feel like I wasted 7 points for Gunnery Team and 13-18 points on Ackbar that could have gone to a more helpful commander.

So, I don't know if this is what's happening in your games, but I know for me, when I'm facing Ackbar I often disregard whether I'm granting double arc, in particular when facing the Ackbar/GT/AF2's, because it doesn't matter almost at all whether I dodge it or not--the best shot for you is still almost certainly going to be the Ackbar GT shots. So it may be that your opponents are doing the same thing, and their decision making calculus determines that the superior positioning of a given spot is worth the one extra sure they'd take from the front arc of Home One, vice the Ackbar'd side shot.

Spread the love! Make sure you always get two targets to spread your fire with each Assault Frigate. 1 on 1 you get more damage output from two shots, but only marginally (I'm taking 0.2 average damage extra, stuff like that). Even with an AF MKII A I would prefer to get two shots instead of a double arc.

Ackbar is trickle damage, especially if you don't have any dice modification. It's not insignificant by any measure, it's quite substantial, but it won't be enough to kill a ship. The only ship I double-arc with even if I have Gunnery Teams is an MC80 at short range, but I guess that one is obvious.
