First time organized play. What to expect?

By DonnieDarkside, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm going to play at my first tournament on Feb 6th. This isn't so much a squad build question as much as it is etiquette and rules.

What should I expect and how should I prepare? I don't want to get in any trouble due to rules mistakes.

#1. Be very, very mobile. Only bring the list you're playing, and the appropriate tokens to run it. Have some sort of container, box, etc that will allow you to pack up all of your ships, cards, tokens, and templates and be ready to move in less than three minutes. Same for setting up your things before a match. Have a system that expedites set up and tear down. There usually isn't much table space available between mats, so pack lightly.

#2. Bring snacks and water. It's likely to be a long day, especially if you make the cut, and you won't have time for constant trips to the snack counter. Protein bars, power bars, and the like are excellent to have when you start getting hungry, and are manageable enough to eat while playing.

#3. TAKE A SHOWER SHORTLY BEFORE GOING TO THE STORE. Again, it's going to be a long day. This is one of the most overlooked "rules" to any event, not just x-wing. No one wants to be cooped up in a small area trying to play a game while someone next to or across from them smells like they woke up in the dump that morning. If you sweat/smell excessively, think about bringing an extra shirt and deodorant. Trust me, everyone around you will appreciate it. And you'll understand why this is so important when you're next to the guy that didn't.

#4. HAVE FUN. Even if you lose every match, don't let it discourage you or put you in a bad mood. It seems so simple, but I've seen so many people get grumpy after a bad game and then it just isn't as fun for everyone else. Remember that every game is a learning experience, win or lose, and the overarching theme of the day should be to simply have a good time.

Lol. Thank you for this. 1 and 2 I hadn't even considered. 3 SHOULD be an absolute no brainier, but I used to play MTG, so I know exactly what you're saying. 4 is pretty much a no brainier too. I'm not playing with the idea I'm going to win, but hope I can at least make top 32
