I had to work in Boston last feb/march. They declared the emergency that shut everything down just after I arrived and nothing melted until two days before I flew home.
Two January's ago I was in Duluth for the polar vortex. The snow banks were 8 feet high there too but they know how to handle snow. It was just stupid cold.
Suck it up east coast. (Not directed at anyone in this thread) ...and I'm jealous of your thundersnow. I've only seen that once.

We ended up with about 2 1/2 feet here, but the drifting snow is what's a real pain.
