Maybe I should try to figure out VASSAL, since I'll have the time. Any tips?
Also, anyone played both VASSAL and Tabletop Simulator enough to have an educated opinion of one versus the other?

Mu0n put together this FAQ for getting started with VASSAL which is pretty comprehensive:

I've never tried Tabletop Simulator but I can say that VASSAL is solid and MuOn does a great job keeping it current.

I mean, mostly I'm kidding around. My brother-in-law is a graduate of UNT, and a friend got his degree from A&M. Another friend grew up in Lubbock. San Antonio and Austin are great towns with a lot of character and culture.
As a native, I think RotJ sums up Texas best:
"There's nothing to see. I used to live here, you know."
"You're going to die here, you know. Convenient."
I live in Seattle. We have mild rain, and few Texans. Win-win.
Swap your snow for the constant 45deg + heat I'm stuck in, comes with red dust and billions of flies that at the end of the working day fall out of my work shirt. Even the kangaroos hide until dusk but the snakes don't those little buggers are every where.
Good luck though!
Be safe if you have to deal with those weather conditions.
It sounds like it might be rough but once the snow stops falling things should be back to normal quickly. Or maybe that's just the the attitude of someone from the upper midwest who will admit that a foot of snow is annoying but nothing that can't be dealt with.
You obviously forgot the last two winters...
Being Canadian, I'm always amused when I see somewhere with 2" of snow and it's labelled as SNOWMAGEDDON. We call that Tuesday.
This would also be a good time to resort your storage, paint some minis, or re-watch all of the original five movies in the correct order (E4, 5, 2, 3, 6)

I would trade Illinois and New Jersey to live in San Antonio again as a civilian. I'm working through the Blizzard right now, it's light and it feels like a waste of my time.

Fixed that for you

Christmas in Lubbock last month - 3 feet of snow with drifts up to 7 feet. I freely admit, that is the exception, but it happens.
Here's what's bad about winter weather in Texas - we don't get just snow; we get snow on top of six inches of ice. That's why we shut things down - well, that and no one in Texas knows how to drive in such weather...

Right?! I'm from Buffalo, NY. We get snow in the feet and nothing closes. November of 2014 we got over seven feet in two days. That was an issue. My neighborhood got hit particularly hard because I live about ten minutes from Lake Erie and that lake effect snow is a pain.

I think one storm brought 2 feet of snow
And was every Wednesday.
Having gone to college in Chicago and having been there for like the third largest blizzard on record, some 10 feet once they were done clearin the roads and making snow canyons under which many vechiles were still buried, this is a chickensh*t snowmaggeddon
(At least in NYC)
Edited by ficklegreendiceI need to make sure to photograph my hoth related toys in the snow
This makes me sad being in Alaska with only a few inches of snow on the ground. We should be at a few feet by now.

I love Alaska - I worked as a volunteer at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks in between the 2nd and 3rd year of my degree back in 2007.
Cool place, nice people, GREAT beer
I'd love it if we would get a few inches here in Michigan, if only to fill in all the potholes in the terrible roads...

I saw a old episode of Top Gear that took place in Detroit, and daaaammmnnn do your roads suck. That said we share a lake that sucks too. And because you have crappy roads, im blaming you for ruining Lake Wisconsin
(Im taking the lake from you)

I lived in Austin for a few years. It's a great place. "If you don't fit in with the rest of Texas, you move to Austin" is what I was told.
Dude! I pm'ed you. If your looking for a game on vassal let me know.
