Best scale for an AT-AT

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

The size needs to fit the assault carrier.

Does the laser cannons on the Rebels' AT-AT design bother anyone else? I hope at somepoint they update them to look more like their film counterparts rather than staying with the Mcqarrie concept art version.

The cardboard buildings from the Dropzone commander sets are an acceptable size for X-Wing urban conflicts. :)

You guys know that there is also a wide assortment of 6mm scale units and terrain available as well, that actually IS the same scale as x-wing.

Yep, I know. I'm allready working on models to use with the Dirtside II rules ^^

Well, these are supposed to be prototypes, so a shift to the classic design could make sense at some point.

According to the video linked earlyer those walkers in rebels were prototypes that were much larger than the Hoth walkers.

That said I want the ground scale game to be 1/144 scale. It makes for much cooler toys if you ask me.

If it were just going to be an isolated game that never needed to interact with anything else, then yeah, sure, 10-15mm scale is good. But if they were to do a small scale ground combat wargame, either as an expansion for x-wing or as a stand alone game, it would simply HAVE to be cross compatible with the x-wing miniatures. There would simply be too many complaints otherwise.

models of Diffrent scales can be used in the same game.

Most X-wing scale ground units would require painting by the end user like the fighters in Star Wars armada. Not a bad thing but not something they have done with the x-wing line.

I'm not sure how well mixing air and ground units on the same playing field would work. an x-wing bumping into the base of an AT -AT makes even less sense to me then when it happens in space.

I want the x-wing and ground game to be compatable but played on seperite maps. portions of the x-wing mat represent the ground war below potentially multiple simultaneous ground games cover one x-wing map being played like a memoir 44 overlord scenario.

I plan to be able to see my cute little guys on the table so I am using great looking 10MM models that actually look like little space-people and not blobs of tiny crap scattered on a base.

;)

What about the new Black Series AT-AT measuring 2.75" tall? Would those work for X-Wing? What scale would the be?

About 1/322 scale. A little bit on the small side compared to x-wing scale, but probably not too bad.

Mels has a 1/270 ATAT.

The DeAgostini AT-ATs are precisely to scale, to the millimeter.

link?

Thanks

AT-AT from DeAgostini have 1/281 scale ,almost perfect but not precisely.

I enjoy knowing that I am right. I enjoy seeing Luke in his X-WING, running with an AT-AT and hanging under it, and watching Luke inside and outside of a Lambda shuttle.

:D

I watch the films often.

My eye balls work and the math is WRONG.

KEEP ON SQUEAKING DAT 30 YEAR OLD TECHNICAL SCALE GANG... KEEP BEING WRONG... WRONG... WRONG.

So.. Your right because the AT-AT you use, which is about 60% bigger than it is supposed to be at 1/270 scale looks correct next to the 10mm figures you use, which are about 60% bigger than they are supposed to be at 1/270 scale.

Go figure.

The scale of the AT-AT in the movies is not very consistent in the first place, which is why finding the size is so difficult

A fair point.

For myself, I think 10mm is alright for most uses as the detail is a little better and painting is not so difficult. 6mm infantry has come a long way in the last 30+ years, but it's just too small at tabletop distances to look like much. Great for large armies, but outside of the Battle of Naboo on the Great Grass Plains standup slugging matches between ground forces seem pretty rare in the Star Wars universe.

How you base your minis can have an effect as well:

  • Infantry on a movement tray or base will seem taller compared to a vehicle that sits directly on the tabletop
  • Vehicles that are based similarly to the infantry will seem better-proportioned
  • Infantry that are knee-deep in snow, mud, or static grass will seem shorter
  • Larger-scale infantry are great for representing "heroic" figures such as unit commanders, etc.

When I was looking for an AT-AT I read different forums and most people voted for Action Fleet Micromachines (the one that Joe Boss is showing). I seem to remember that there was some kind of discussion about the "canon" size of the AT-AT so... I followed TUZ 's example and this is the result.

As reference, R-2 and C-3PO (in 6mm scratchbuilt version).

And for those of you looking for suitable 6mm miniatures, I use CinC solar empire Marines:

As rebel pilots:

farstar-28.jpg?w=680

Or mandalorians:

Epic Orks works well too, with a few modifications, as Gamorrean guards:

Hope it helps!

The Micromachines don't look BAD, by any stretch, but they're also clearly not "right."

That being said, your base for them is EVERY KIND of awesome! I LOVE how you've incorporated the firing arcs and other details clearly and unobtrusively.

Well done, sir!

Very true and I have said that there are other options, but my option (which has been used by a few cool people now also) is the best out there.

The new AT-AT is great too but since I already have the old AT-AT and they are the same size I am cool with what I own. When you see Luke in his X-WING Cockpit and you know that the FFG model looks like you can set four of these cockpits into the head of these Micro Machines AT-AT's and you know that the AT-AT head can carry four or five crew... DAT IS GOOD NUFF PERIOD.

 :D :P

We Micro Machines AT-AT  's both Old & New ARE RIGHT... and the arguers are still... WRONG.

Micro Machines Haters!!!

Nice job RougeLeader... what are the dimensions of your AT-AT going to be (height wise)?

These ones are 4" (10cm) tall and fit the Gozanti perfectly:

002_zpsgp9ptekc.jpg

I love this picture! how did you get the at-at's to stick to the gozanti?

It is all an illusion.... they are just standing on the base.... that's how perfect this scale is!
