Two of the largest gaming conventions are held in the Midwest. Origins typically gets over 20,000 attendees. Plus Asmode is a sponsor this year for Origins.

So US Nationals in June, then NA Champs in August, and Worlds in November-ish.

That kind of bones the entire West Coast when you consider having to get time off work multiple times, travel expenses, etc.

I'm not sure the West Coast is being singled out. Even if I lived in easy driving distance of both Columbus and Indianapolis, I'm already carefully evaluating whether I can afford enough time off to go to GenCon--and I certainly can't do both.

More X-wing is always good, but I wonder if they're not just dividing the player pool.

EDIT: That might be a good thing, of course. GenCon and Worlds were both tough to manage this year, as I understand it.

It seems like a very short season. You would think that you would have a big event, then start in a new season very quickly after that. Also I'd think that a big event in the west, the middle and the east, feeding into a larger event in the middle would be cool. I nominate the Las Vegas Open for the West event.... cause who doesn't like to go to Vegas?

January to November is short ?

cause who doesn't like to go to Vegas?

Uh... me. It's both fantastically expensive and completely unappealing.

I think that is partly why they are starting up the Flight Crew program. To build up larger events like at Adepticon. That FFG is going to three conventions now is great expansion.

I'm curious about the adepticon events. Mostly the event where they announce wave 9.

I Agree!!

Calling it. Wave 9 announcement at Adepticon.

They also have a presence at GAMA Trade Show. That's where Rebel Aces was announced in 2014.

Didn't they announce wave 7 there in 2015 too ?

No Wave 7 was announced at Star Wars Celebration in April.

Yeah it was Armada wave 2 at Gama last year.

US Nationals, take that Canadians!!! CBus, Ohio and then Gencon in Indy. Gotta love being an X-Wing player in the Midwest.

We have our own Nationals. Congrats you finally got one.

When the Canadian Nationals can't even get 30 players and is less than interested in getting out of province players it's a pretty sad state... Would love to see some changes to Nationals this year that would make it an actual "National" event...

Yes I agree. I sent a lengthy message to Lion Rampant in regards to last years Nationals locations for all the games as well as our local Regionals for X-Wing last Summer. Fan Expo is a terrible location, too expensive. One player went from here, he was our Regionals winner and was first after Swiss at Nationals. We got 34 for our X-Wing Store championship which is more than last years Regionals in Fredericton and last years Nationals, almost combined.

I hope this year will be different, FFG seems to be taking a better hand of Canadian Regionals this year already.

They couldn't get 30 players because of the location they chose. Canadian players basically boycotted the event. The previous nationals had 70 players and the regional in the GTA last year capped at 60. There are players, they screwed up by choosing Fan Expo as the venue though.

wish they had announced this a few months earlier. Con Rate for Origins at all the close by hotels is already sold out.

wish they had announced this a few months earlier.

Well doesn't make sense to talk about the 2016 national championship in 2015... World's only happened a few months ago after all.

But as it stands, Origins is 5 months away...

Not great for most of the country really, I've got a minimum 13 hour drive for any of the 3 major events, which means I'm coughing up for a flight. Would be nice if they were spread around a bit.

The way most cons work 5 months isn't really enough planning time. I'm sure many people won't be able to attend because they didn't know soon enough. I love that they added another Major event to look forward to during the year, and I will probably go in the future, but the announcement was poorly planned logistically speaking for most people. And the first article about the 2016 season was last October with Store Championship sign ups, no reason not to talk about it sooner if able.

I agree it's a little awkward to have them all in the upper Midwest. But Worlds happens at FFG HQ, which makes sense. The North American Championship happens at GenCon, which will continue to make sense as long as it stays the biggest gaming convention on the continent.

Origins is probably one of the biggest in the next tier after GenCon. I guess DragonCon is probably in the same tier, but it's much less gaming-focused. Ditto SDCC.

I guess this is mostly me rambling. What I mean is that of the three majors in the continental US, Nationals is the only one they seem likely to move, and although it's moderately inconvenient I understand why they put it there.

The issue is, what other major boardgaming conventions are there.

I've heard from friends, through other people involved with DragonCon, that they're planning on expanding the gaming out of the Hilton's basement ballroom and into the much larger space in America's Mart 1, either for this year or coming years, so that may be shifting a bit. They had a miniatures gaming specific track this year, with painting panels and even original X-wing lead designer Jay Little there to talk specifically about X-wing, so that's a good sign for future gaming plans, I think.

We have some plans for DragonCon down here in the South... so keep an eye open if you'll be around, or are looking for an alternative to the NOVA Open.

I totally understand why they put them where they did, just wish there was somewhere else that made sense. Dragoncon would be great since I go every year, but gaming is a very small part of that convention, and it is a much larger convention then Origins. I would say it's a lot bigger then Gencon as well attendance wise, they under report their numbers every year because of the fire marshal. I've heard from people in the know that the numbers are much closer to Comic Con. I heard about the Americas Mart thing as well, that will be very cool, I would love to see D*Con build up the gaming track in general.

With how packed it is this would not surprise me in the least.
