Flechette torpedoes

By Jedu, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Maybe it's a silly question... but do the flechette torpedoes deal any damage? Or only give stress? The card says:

ATTACK (TARGET LOCK): Discard this card and spend your target lock to perform this attack.

After you perform this attack, the defender receives 1 stress token if its hull value is "4" or lower.

Some ordnance cards (e.g. plasma torp) say "after dealing damage" do sth. If there is nothing about dealing damage, does the defender still gets any damage that have been rolled and not evaded?

Unless they specifically say to do X and then cancel all dice they do damage as normal AND the additional effect. So Flechettes will do a normal 3-die attack, then, regardless of whether that attack hit or did any damage at all, they will give a stress token if the defender has 4 hull or less.

Compare, for instance, Ion Pulse Missiles, which do a total of 1 damage and 2 ion tokens regardless of the results on the dice.

Do exactly what the card says, and don't assume it says stuff it doesn't say.

it means after the attack! so deal damage or none after that defender receives 1 stress

The only dumb question is the one that people don't ask :D

Note also that the only thing that will change a ship's hull value is a Hull Upgrade - other than that the hull value will remain the same regardless of how much damage it has been dealt.

They also don't care if they hit, making this a decent combo with Munitions Failsafe (Hey, Soontir, come here...)

Agreed, almost hope it doesn't do damage so you can us it over and over again.

Hmm I interpret that wrong too

You may want to double-check me on this but I actually believe that the hull upgrade does not change your hull value for purposes of the flechette torps. I think the FAQ has something about hull value is printed value for these doesn't matter what upgrades you have.

Check the FAQ though don't take my word on this one I'm not 100% sure.

You're wrong.

You might be thinking of the Final Salvo rules which specifically call out printed, un-upgraded primary weapon values. Hull Upgrade does change your hull value for all purposes.

If Hull Upgrade didn't actually increase your effective hull value when faced with something like Flechette Torpedoes then it would be rather useless. The Torp is looking at the "hull value" to determine if the target is Stressed or not. You know what else looks at hull value? The rules for destroying a ship and if HU doesn't increase that number they why have it at all when you'd still be destroyed when you have damage cards equal to a ship's hull value.

Don't forget that "hull value" is the number on the ship card - regardless of any damage dealt. So flechette torps won't work against a decimator for example; even if it is only 4 damage cards away from destruction.

Hull upgrade increases your hull total prior to the match, just like VI increases pilot skill "permanently"

Random aside- I saw Vorpal Sword liked the second post and thought "HE'S BACK!" then saw the date and got sad.
