so we have the core set and a couple of extra ships. When it comes to building a squad there is always arguments over who gets which upgrades. For example, we only have one Marksmanship card. Are there any rules here, coin toss?? Other than setting a point limit - how are the available upgrade cards divided up between players?
which player gets first choice over upgrade cards
If you're playing casually between yourselves at home, just proxy the cards and both have them. You only definitely, absolutely, positively need the cards for competitive play.
buy your own set and don't give away your PRECIOUS
I recomend you to focus on ships and simply use a Squadron Builder App, copy, paste and print cards to learn how to fly and apply your tactics. Then, if you want to fly for money, it is another world.
Apparently the new rule book doesn't say, but the old one said the Imperial player got first choice on upgrade cards.
But as other people say, just proxy stuff until you have more.

Which makes sense since there are only a couple of upgrades even usable by the Imperials in the core set.
The owner gets first pick.
Munchkin rule 0.

Using the original core set the Imperials may not get enough points even when they get to pick the EPT they want to use first.

This is really my first thought on the matter. If I own all the ships we are playing with then I get to use what I want. Now if I want you to have a good experience so we can play again I will not forbid your use of upgrades out of spite and may even give you the first crack at the "good" upgrades that everyone can use but which I only have in limited numbers.
Unlike many here I'm not a big fan of using proxies even in friendly games. I can certainly see why it may be done but feel there are times more can be learned by using something less than the most optimal choices.
I only consider using proxies to see if I would like to purchase it. And then I may only use them while the real version is coming in the mail.
This is the way our group of friends plays with Magic the Gathering, and we are just casual and play at a friend's house where the rules could be whatever we wanted.
MTG is a much more expensive hobby than X-wing.
Use a squad builder, try everything put, use that to decide what you want to buy.
Actually, if you want to try it out, pull it up in Vassal and actually fly it against someone, then buy it... though, I usually disconnect all of that from when I am buying and go with availability and desire. I've wanted a lot of out of stock for a while, but get backups when I can't find those after payday...
Have either of you ever been in prison? I'm guessing not or this wouldn't even be a question so who is stronger? You should base it on that and who wants it more.
Make those upgrade cards yours.
Use a squad builder and proxy if its just casual play.
I'd get annoyed by proxies in every game. I didn't buy my own Raider and Gozanti to see the peasants flying around with the Emperor and Kallus in their hobo starships.

Hahaha, indeed. But it's not about you. It's about getting more people into the game.

Honestly, I largely proxy regardless of whether I actually own the cards or not (tournaments excepted of course) and I tend to proxy only stuff I own or plan to own in the near future unless I'm proxying unreleased stuff - because I don't want to get practice with cards I don't plan on using. It's just much more quick and straightforward to set lists up when it involves 'get out one or two pieces of paper' than when it involves 'get out a folder of pilots, hunt for two or more pilots, get out a deck of upgrades, hunt for anywhere up to a dozen upgrades, lay them out in the right order' then gets in the way WAY more if you don't have any side-space and you're just playing on a 3'x3' surface.

Clear case of hobo jealousy there, stay stuck in your fancy homes the hobo's can pick up their bindle and go anywhere we please man don't be tied down by possessions.

I own multiples of every ship (save for epic - just 1 each) and I always proxy unless its a tourney. Honestly, pulling out cards everytime is a hassle when trying out new and different builds. It's just much more convenient.

The people still need to have the ships to play them, even if they dont have every version of a tie fighter that's ever been sold. Your game sounds no fun.

We tend to have fewer meta lists. We get creative with what we have. Yeah, no fun here!
How many of the proxy-scum do it to play something other than top tier net lists? 5%?
Well my scumbag friend only does terrorists so he proxies stuff from imperial expansions.
I do it for stuff spoiled but not yet released.
I don't do meta builds I fly defenders.

You would trade them for a pack of smokes? prison style.
If you are playing at home and you only have one set I suggest just photo copy the cards you have, that way you wont be proxying cards you don't have but you will save on arguments. We don't like using proxies but this is how we do it if both of us want to use the same card in each list but we only have one.

Sure, sure, believe all the stuff you've seen on the TV. If someone had a copy of "Veteran Instincts" that I needed, I would cut that *****, drag them into the showers and from there my actions would really depend on how "friendly" the match is and what time my opponent's mom is expected home.

But those cards WOULD be mine.
Oh yes, they would be mine.
