Anyone tried T-70 Blue Ace with R7-T1?

By Trevor Goodchild, in X-Wing

So tried searching for any posts on this but the forum search function is a bit crap.

A refresher - Blue Ace allows you to use the hard1 template for boosting. And R7-T1 is:

Action: Choose an enemy ship at Range 1-2. If you are inside that ship's firing arc, you may acquire a target lock on that ship. Then, you may perform a free boost action.

Seems like a combo with potential. Either boost to get the target in arc and be able to mod your attack dice or boost out of arc and have a target lock for a future engagement possibly with a focus too.

Putting aside the argument that there are better ways to spend 30points, has anyone had any experience with this combo or thoughts on how it might play? Thinking of using it in an escalation list, so the round 30points is a plus.

I've only used that droid with Ello Asty, but it works great with him and his white trolls. Especially with VI to make him PS9.

That would be my issue with Blue Ace, he's middle of the table PS-wise and so moving with a boost may not work out as well as a PS1/2 or PS9/10

Definitely had interesting potential. He has 2 basic weaknesses: no EPT, so he can't modify his attack if he uses his admittedly cool ability. Also, at PS5, he can't maximize the utility of his, again, admittedly cool ability.

Your idea could mediate one of his issues and make him a real monster against generics. I still feel he'll get torn up by aces easily, so he may be a bit pricey compared to other similar options.

I say go for it! Give it some tests, see how it plays, and get back to me!

PS: Throw in an Integrated Astromech for good measure.

All very good points, thanks for your insights. Hadn't thought of the Ello Asty pairing! I'll have to give that a try another game.

I like the sound of BB-8 with Blue Ace instead, lots of moving shenanigans.

I set up a squad with the Blue Ace, R7-T1 combo for my son, but he misplayed the ship and had it taken out before he could use the droid. My son hasn't joined me at the LGS the past two weeks, and I have been prepping other squads for store championships, so I haven't gotten back to trying it out myself.

I've played the droid on T -65's and really like it. Thought about putting it on Blue Ace but to lie PS. I really like Ello and thought of this same build. Have yet to try it, but I would like to.

Flew Ello Wednesday night with Poe and Wedge vs Razzi,Guri and a Kirhaxz. I lost but Ello rode Razzi like a rocking horse. She had one shot on him then he was behind her. She couldn't shake him or block him. I forget what mech I had on him but T1 might have saved his life vs Guri in the end phase. In some ways I like him better than Poe. Definitely going to look at the T1 for the next game.

I have 2 problems with it. 1 has already been covered about blue aces low pilot skill. The other is generally speaking I don't want to be in someone's front arc.

I flew against that build 2 tourneys ago. If I remember correctly, my opponent ran him as a flanker with 3 naked B-wings.

It was a solid combo. Hard to predict especially when he'd throw in a Talon Roll once in a while. It couldn't take on my Whisper in the end, but it was able to react to my decloaks quite well.

That was my first time with him and/or the T70. I think he's easier to use than Poe. A white t-roll plus an action is slick. I'm going to try him with ptl and the T1. He was murder vs the triple six. Once I got the tl I held on to it and used a focus.

R7-T1 is the only way I've ever flown Blue Ace. They were made for each other. I use him as a generic hunter, while the rest of the list (Bat-Wedge & Jake) mop up the aces.

Nice to hear. I'm looking forward to trying him in an escalation list. Wedge, Tycho and Corran will be among those he'll accompany. Any tips on Blue Ace R7T1 (Bar71?)

If you can angle it right, you can use his 90 degree boot combined with R7-T1 to put yourself at R1 with TL outside of the arc of your attacker. It's a bit hard to explain but you want to try end your manouevre perpendicular to your target, inside R2, sort of on the edge of their arc. That way, when you activate R7-T1, the 90 degree boost will move you into R1 and facing your target thanks to the turn, but at the same time should (hopefully) push you out of their arc. It often doesn't quite work, but I had it happen a few times over the course of a day.

And at the very least, with 4 attacks +TL at R1, most generics are going to take a pounding.

Cool thanks for the tip! I can picture what you mean and it's an application of the boost from R7-T1 that no other ship is capable of. It would be much harder to pull off with the 1bank template.

That's what I'm hoping! I'm now thinking:

-able to pull off a good shot on generic/lower PS, then boost in for the kill.

-at risk of being in an aces ark, boost long and hope I don't get snagged and have a TL to use up in lining up for a future attack run (where a T-roll may come into play - sure it's red, but I'll still have the target lock!)
