Heading into a tournament and expecting a few Vader, Soontir and palpmobile lists my question is what are some strong counters to this list?
Palpmobile
Anything that gives/causes stress will make Soontir cry, the best way to kill him is to have his actions denied. Heavy laser canon is a bit of a bummer and TLT requires him to be lucky and can strip tokens well.
The worst thing about playing that build is that there isn't a significant weak point. Take out Palp first? Whatever, I still have two of the best pilots in the game still on the board. Go for Vader or Fel? Good luck killing them before they get away and then stay away for most of the remainder of the match.
The best thing to do is get one of the two aces off the board as soon as possible. Then go for gramps. If you go for the shuttle first, the other two will tear you apart in the process and you'll likely never get a good shot on them once you shift your fire. Good luck actually pinning one of them down in enough arcs to do so though.
A stresshog is one of the best counters against these three. Even if you never actually get a shot on Vader or Fel, you create a HUGE no-fly zone that demands to be taken care of as a higher priority to your other ships. It's almost as if Biggs himself were the pilot. I just won our winter kit tournament with Palp/Vader/Fel and the only time I lost Vader(other than vs 4TLT) was when he was double stressed ONE TIME from a hog.
And that brings me to the bane of pretty much any list out there right now; the quad TLT. It is by FAR the worst matchup a Palp/Vader/Fel list can face. It's a heap of HP to chew through, it's 360 degrees of paper cuts, and it greatly tests the meddle of your green dice. My only loss in that last tournament was versus these guys. If you want to be "That Guy", then just throw four Scum Y-wings with TLT and Unhinged Astromech on each of them and you'll pretty much auto-top 4.
Like mentioned if you have a stress bot, or other means such as Tactician, stressing either Vader or fel is the way to go.
I find if you have to choose Vader is the easier target.
Fel will likely turtle up if he sees a threat comin his way.
With 4 dice (Stealth device) the emperor and focus and evade its going to be tough to get any dmg in.
Vader on the other hand usually wants to target lock, then either reposition (leaving him with no modifiers to defend with) or he focuses (and again may spend that focus on attack) makes him a easier target to get dmg through.
Plus Vader doesn't have 4 green dice like fel.
Even if Vader still has his it's better than shooting at a ship with 4 green and focuses and evade.
Plus if you catch Vader with a stressbot that's usually a good indicator of a dead Vader next round
Then if you manage to get Vader off the board fast enough, focus your attention to the shuttle.
If you killed Vader fast enough and didn't take a lot of losses the shuttle should go down fairly easy.
This makes fel a lot easier to deal with imo.
Also something I notice is a lot of players (not all) seem to keep Vader closer to the shuttle. Fel goes farther off on his own.
If you notice this and have to choose who to target, I'd rather turn my back onto one ship rather than 2, so I tend to go towards the shuttle and Vader direction.
Edited by Krynn007What about a well flown miniswarm? Isn't blocking one of the two aces just as good as stress? I ask because I'm planning on flying a Poe and Z swarm (Pocket Full of PoeZs) but have yet to test it against this list. I'd try it myself at home but I ain't got a Lambda yet.
Can be tough against a mini swarm.
Your going to really want to block either fel or Vader with those z95
Not sure how many ships you have but if you can focus fire that shuttle down in a round would be of help.
Though at this point Vader and fel are likely behind you and that's bad.
It's a tough call.
If you can position correctly and fel is stressed from Ptl you could potentially block him
Vader on the other hand doesn't have that 1 turn and in a lot if cases as I mentioned above he is using his first action to target lock and therefore his other action is with reposition or focus
This can put him in a good position to be blocked next round which can equal a dead Vader.
Again If you manage to kill either ace I go for the shuttle.
Any ships of mine that are near dead I may run into the shuttle try to keep alive if it's my best option to keep a ship on the board and if fel isn't too close behind
Blocking I'd Not as effective as a stressbot.
Blocking you have to be more precise where you move and hope your opponent flies where you guess.
A stressbot at range 3 has a nice wide arc and hard for aces to completely dodge. Catching fel who tries to push the limit out of arc but doesn't succeed becomes a dead fel fast.
With two stress from the stressbot and his Ptl, that's 3 turns before he gets any actions.
You may now have your way with fel
I'm running your standard 38 point regen Poe with 5 Bandits. Generally I use 2 of the Zs to cover the two maneuvers I think are most likely and hopefully have 3 if not 4 arcs on my target if the block was successful. I've had a lot of success vs your standard rebel builds (5 Zs rip a Y Wing apart pretty quick) but am worried about Brobots and Palpmobile. My list comes in at 98 so I have room for Weapons Guidance on Poe but at 98 I figure I'll have the intiative bid which is nice when I want to clear Goldies or Wardens before they do too much damage. Thanks for the insight friend.
Well this is my opinion, but I'd try block Vader.
Of coarse there a lot of variables with the board state. Asteroids, set up initiative etc.
Sometimes an opportunity opens up and you take it.
For example If fel push the limits and now you know he's limited next turn to clear his stress, then you have a good chance to block and gets some shots off, ya I'd take that if not I'd focus my attention on Vader
Also like I said too. Not everyone but I have been noticing a tendency of Vader being closer to the shuttle so I'd rather turn my back to 1 ship than 2 if I had to pick.
As for the initiative bid, If your shooting at ps2 ships they get to shoot back If your Bandits kill them as well. Since same ps gets to shoot before removed from the board
Really the initiative bid would be best for blocking low ps ships.
I wouldn't sorry too much for initiative.
Veteran instincts poe usually moves after most ships these days
Edited by Krynn007The last tourney I played in I lost Vader I lost the match if I won I had all 3 ships still on the board. On my weekly nights I still won with fel. However I did change my list to deal with stress on Vader adding mk2 ion engines he doesnt reposion as well but the dail is much better. Stress on fel is killer
A 'Jellyfish' swarm can do fairly well - 7 scum Z-95s with feedback arrays. Avoiding that many range 1 bubbles is **** hard for the aces, and 7 2-dice attacks can dispatch Darth Psoriasis fairly swiftly.
Generally anything which doesn't let them roll dice is good. Veteran Instincts Ten Numb with a Mangler Cannon is very good at shooting up Fel, and you can shove a tactican in the back seat of a B-wing/E for extra stress options.

Quad TLT is good against Imperial Aces? How did they tag Soontir?

granted its not easy, but 24 red dice vs 32 green dice (assuming SD hasnt been popped) green dice will fail. AT cant save him all the time Palp can only be used once per round.

Because it's very hard to get into all four range one holes if they're flown with any skill at all. Green dice do NOT like being thrown multiple times, they fail a lot no matter what your token stack looks like, and it only takes three paper cuts to kill him.

If Soontir finds himself in range of 4 twin laser turrets, he deserves to die. How does a ship with two actions a turn (which can be boost and/or barrel roll) end up in such a position when it gets to move last and none of the opposing ships have any way to modify their movement after they reveal their dial? By making a mistake...

Truth.
I'd think you'd fly Soontir carefully and conservatively until Vader and Palp have done some of the initial work and some ships were getting ready to explode on both sides, then Soontir can swing in, add to your firepower and help finish up. By the time the opponent is down to two Y-Wings, Soontir should be able to outmaneuver them and dodge their attacks while burning down a third one. If you kill three and Soontir lives until time, you win, right?
