Feedback request for a ship tray

By comatose, in Star Wars: Armada

After seeing some of the command trays that people were making and selling, I decided to make my own variation. I need to tweak the thickness and a couple other things that you won't be able to notice in this image, but I'd appreciate ideas and feedback as to whether to alter this design. Thanks!

Try adding some space for damage cards.

Looks good. I don't think a damage card holder is really needed. At least IMO. I would make sure however that the ship cards can fit with sleeves. Despite no damage cards how about a top lip or holder to display upgrade cards?

Yeah, I'm torn on the whole damage and upgrade thing. It would be nice, but I don't think it is at all practical because of the variability in quantity. One possibility would be to put very thin slots into the sides. However, what makes that better than just putting the cards next to the tray?

I kinda like the idea of being able to sit the upgrade cards upright, it wouldn't make the tray much bigger. Still even without room for cards, I think it's pretty nice

I like it and the upright upgrade cards are a good idea. I don't know how the rules come in about keeping upgrades where the other player can see them. Even as it is it looks a lot better than ones I've seen sold on e-bay

I like it a lot mate.

Are you planning on selling them?

Second the request for making sure they can fit sleeved cards.

I really dig it the way it is. The problem I've seen with some other trays is that they take up a lot of real-estate on the table. Depending on where I play space can be at a premium so a small tray would be nice. Also, I don't mind it not having space for the upgrade cards since the amount of upgrades you could take is pretty variable as well.

That looks really good! Everything is nice and snug, good job!

Not a fan of "upright" card placement. To easy to bend your cards and can lead to hard feelings during heated matches. :(

As for damage, could be placed on ship card or maybe betweem command and speed dial.

Zombicide: Black Plague went with their new character boards that holds inventory cards in a vertical arrangement. It works pretty nicely:

I knew I was missing something. Just got my Zombicide in the mail last week. Thats exactly what I was thinking.

Noob question, but don't speed dials stay next to the ship during play, on the field itself?

I like this one since it doesn't have room for the upgrades. The smaller space and material requirement is a big plus given that you don't always have upgrades for all your ships.. Would also join in on the notion to make sure there is room for a sleeved ship card.

Could maybe use a thumb hole to get the speed dial out. I say that not knowing how far it rises above and if you can grab it easy.

I never play with them there since it becomes one more thing to move around while moving ships and using the maneuver tool and what have you.

Thanks! I might. I noticed a few other people selling them through Shapeways, but Shapeways is crazy expensive. I could 3D print them myself, but they take over an hour each. I'm exploring having them "mass" produced via injection molding if I can find a reasonable manufacturer.

The thing I don't like about upright cards is that I wouldn't want my opponent to have them. I want to be able to look across the table and see what upgrades are on each ship without having to ask. Same goes for any face-up damage cards.

I've asked my FLGS to get me a pack of FFG's tarot sleeves so I can be sure it fits. Even if it doesn't in the current prototype, it won't take a lot to adjust the size. For the speed dial, it has enough space to rock a little bit in the spot; you don't need fingernails to get it out if that's what you're wondering. ;)

Hmmmm what about those of us who like to use the alternate art ship cards? How does this look sideways?

I need to get an alternate card art ship card to check it against card information, but the ship ID token is the only slot that has a specific orientation. However, the token still fits turned 90 degrees, it's just not as clean looking.

That was what I was wondering.

Seems you could move the speed dial and command dial stack closer together towards the center and eliminate where they are now and get a material savings.

No.

The complete Setup Diagram of the Learn to Play Booklet shows the Speed Dials are off-board, next to the Ship Cards and Command Dials.

This setup is not changed by any rule in the Rulebook, and thus, tis the closest thing we have to "Rules" on the matter..>

It is a common misconception amongst X-Wing Players who play Armada, however. :)

That's a good idea, I'll give that a shot on the next prototype print and see which looks better. As an aside, the first version I did had the dials next to one of the short ends of the ship card, but the 3D printer I'm using only has a 5.5" square bed, just a hair too small.

Make it stackable for transit? upgrade card sitting on the ship card and then just lay them out.

The other issue there is the command token / defense token overlapping the card - you've done a great job making sure they don't overlap key text/graphics on a normal card, you'd just have to make sure they don't overlap key text/graphics on an alt art card.

Also if people want upright upgrade card slots (I wouldn't), maybe do that as a separate tray?

I do like your design here, minimal to get the job done, which should cut down on table space as well as product cost. But looks very functional and stackable! I'd buy these for a reasonable price.

Cut away one end of each recess a little, thus by putting a little pressure on that area the card or token will pop up. See-saw like.
