The Lead By Example countdown thread

Yippie! The new sourcebook just made the transition to "Shipping Now", meaning that if you're on the Left Coast, you're probably about 8 days out from a new Tome of Knowledge.

Mind you, we're not playing AoR and I don't see a commander in my groups future - but more is always better!

I have a commander in my group, and she's going to be thrilled this is almost out.

:D

Commander is my favorite AOR career so I'm psyched.

I'm about to roll up a new campaign this weekend, so it won't make it in time for its inception, but if anyone rolls up a Commander, then it'll be nice to have.

I'm really looking forward to the mass combat rules and the Ishi Tib and Chagrians species, personally.

I have it pre ordered so I just check my mail every so often.

I wonder if these mass combat rules will differ from the ones we already have.

I expect that the rule will build units more as characters.

like having stats for the 501st legion or something similar.

With units having wounds and Stun/morale

kind of like a large minion group.

Eeeeh if that's the case I would likely stick with the mass combat rules we already have as I don't really want to keep track of wounds for units in a massive battle. I'm more hoping for maybe a more clear way for how the Commander can affect mass combat I suppose than having a system that tracks minute details like unit wounds and what not.

The current Mass combat system already does this?

the commanders skill + unit type determines the dice rolled

I'd say the current system is more abstract than that. Effectively the GM already knows pretty much who wins; what remains is how messy a victory it is. That's what the dice determine to an extent.

However it could be that that's what I assume because that's how it's presented in OA1; it may be more balanced in other people's games. I haven't tried it.

I envisioned that the old rules were for small, squad-based, tactical combat. These newer mass combat rules I'm hoping are for much larger strategic level battles.

Yeah, curious to see how the mass combat rules shake out.

I'm hoping they don't go into too much crunch-based detail, but it will be interesting to see what sort of balance the writer of that portion struck given the system's narrative basis.

I'm wondering if it will just be a reprint with the idea being that placing useful rules in an adventure may not be a good spot for them.

I'm pretty sure the rules in OaA1 are just a taste of what we'll see in LbE. More options, a less gimicky way of building the dice pool (seriously, base difficulty only based on how many enemies there are, not what kind?), guidelines for massive space battles in addition to land battles, and maybe even naval battles (this I don't expect too much, but it would be cool to have to help emulate the battle for Dac). More ways for leaders to influence the battle rather than just give upgrades equal to ranks in leadership. Those are my main hopes for that part of the book, anyway.

Pretty sure it's not just a straight a reprint. Trust me on this one ;)

Alright. Granted I'm going to love the book anyway since Commander is one of my favorite careers.

Its one of mine as well though depending on how much the new cost rules FFG is setting effect online costs I may have to wait until mid Febuary to get it.

Well, nothing at my FLGS - but I knew I was jumping the gun this early. More likely I'll have it next friday.

We haven't even gotten any of the preview articles yet.

tenchi2a Where did you get that rule from?

My money is on February 2nd for the change to "In Stores".

CSI is calling it Feb 5th on my preorder.

Hopefully we'll get a new preview for it this week.

Onslaught at Arda I

I have the book in hand!

Any questions? Keep in mind, I collect the books and typically skim through, but it takes me a while to actually get through them and rarely have a chance to play, so I may not be totally up to date on everything that has been released so far.

What ships does it have? Any notable equipment? Any notable special rules added? Rough impression, how are the new specializations?
