What should I read next?

By hardbap, in X-Wing Off-Topic

So far I've read Dark Disciple and Shadows of the Empire. What should I pick up next?

Tarkin.

Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston's X-Wing novels.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Or if you insist on Star wars, Heir to the Empire

Tarkin and the one with Kannan and Hera in it. I liked those. I listened to Aftermath and it was not as horrible as others have stated. Maybe due to listening with my son?

Heir to the empire trilogy is an oldcanon must read, and still worth reading into nu canon. Same goes for the original Han Solo trilogy, and the x-wing books.

I would read Lost Stars after Tarkin. I had a hard time with Rebel Dawn and Twilight Company, still reading Twilight Company. Heir to the Jedi and Aftermath are not as terrible as others claim. Lords of the Sith was okay but dragged in parts.

Old EU? Thrawn, X-Wing, Darth Plagueis (Saves TPM. That is quite the accomplishment). Disneyverse? Tarkin (amazing!), Before the Awakening (adds a lot to the movie, has multiplied my enjoyment of it!), A new Dawn. I am reading Aftermath right now and so far it hasn't quite clicked. The writing style is one I dislike, but in longer sessions I found myself being able to look beyond it, so maybe I will like it in the end. Wouldn't recommend it for now, though.

My top 3 new canon novels are:

Lost Stars

Battlefront: Twilight Company

A New Dawn

Some favorite legends books include:

Republic Commando

Revan

Tales from the Bounty Hunters

Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy

Revenge of the Sith

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

I've read that one. :)

GRR Martin's "Songs of Ice and Fire" series is amazing if you haven't read it. The TV show is not bad, but the books are so much better. Season 1 of 10 episodes is really 1100 pages. TV show does it's best, but starts to go off the rails in the latest season. It's much better than ANY of the Star Wars books.

When it comes to EU, I say the only series worth reading is the Thrawn one. Well, the one with Xizor was OK. I couldn't finish any of the others, especially Rogue Squadron.

Read those too. :)

I should've been more specific in my topic I suppose. I'm really looking for Star Wars books. A quick search on Amazon was a tad overwhelming.

Lost Stars is really good so maybe actually read that before Tarkin.

Ignore all the EU stuff, except the Thrawn trilogy. Out of the new stuff, everything I read is at least decent, except for the one about Luke and the girl with the gun. That was terrible.

Read "Lost Stars".

Use "Aftermath" to prop up your coffee table to make it level. Has no use otherwise.

Or read it and make up his own mind. Not everyone hated it just like not everyone loves other books.

I have read a bit more of Aftermath now and I actually think it is worth a read. No masterpiece by any stretch, but it has interesting aspects, like first leads to how the Galactic Empire transitioned into the First Order. The story is good enough to make me look past the wonky writing.

Also, I'm not looking for literary classics. I'm just looking to be entertained for a little while. While I agree with some of the criticism of Dark Disciple (it did have a bit of a tween Vampire romance feel to it) I still enjoyed it because I'm reading these for the fluff/characters. (note: I find Ventress one of the most interesting in SW, EU or otherwise which may be why I looked past DD's flaws). If I want to be challenged I'll re-read Vonnegut, Gibson, etc. ;)

Thank you all for the recommendations. I'm starting with The Thrawn Trilogy and will probably go with Lost Stars after that.

I hadn't heard any criticism of Dark Disciple. It was really good, I was pleasantly surprised by that.

Amazon reviews had a few naysayers. Not many though.

They always do, wouldn't care for that unless there really is an overwhelming amount.

Yup. Negative reviews gets more readers than positive reviews.

Dark Disciple is what I'm going to start listening to with my son now that we finished Aftermath.

After you're done with Star Wars if you want to just be entertained for a little while I highly recommend two quick trilogies from newer authors that are great fun. One already has an adaptation on the way and I have no doubt the other will soon.

Red Rising- Imagine if Game of Thrones was in space and Ender Wiggin was born a slave in Meereen. This series is delightful.

The Fear Saga- Aliens that vastly outgun us decide they want our planet. A really tech-heavy invasion story. Tons of fun.

Dark Disciple is what I'm going to start listening to with my son now that we finished Aftermath.

Warning for family listens: Sexy-time is a feature of this book.
