Eye Gee Eighty-Eight: Cannon Upgrade?

By PhyrexianScience, in X-Wing Squad Lists

My former list.

I had a chance to test this against my own Vader Interceptors list as well as a TIE/fo Swarm and I have some commentary about it.

First, I was greatly impressed with Advanced Sensors. Like, holy **** guys. If you're running Brobots and don't have this upgrade then I don't know what you're doing. Second, flying an asymmetrical list is really tough and I found myself defaulting to symmetrical flying tactics more often than not. The only thing that I'm still on the fence about is HLC over Manglers. Manglers give me more wiggle room for my Illicit upgrade, as it lets me run Hot Shots or Glitterstim. This comes with the cost of one less attack die, but I also get to attack twice at any range. HLC has me dead set on running Inertial Dampeners, and gives me the extra firepower.

I've come to this conclusive list, which I have yet to test fully (My IG's are in the shop for a repaint).

IG-88B and C

  • Veteran Instincts (1)
  • "Mangler" Cannon (4)
  • Autothrusters (2)
  • Advanced Sensors (3)
  • IG-2000
  • Glitterstim (2)

Total: 96

Since I'm on the fence about the Cannon upgrade, I'd like to be convinced one way. Which cannon should I go with?

Why not one of each (Asymmetrical loadouts)?

Since you have 4 points to spare, up one mangler cannon to an HLC, and leave the other as-is.

Then, fly them more or less the same, just be sure to keep the one at range 2-3 to trigger the HLC properly.

IG88s take a lot of practice because they fly so unconventionally. You can't always just point them at the enemy and expect to win. You have to plan their flight path a bit, because once they get blocked up with targets behind them or stuck on rocks, they can actually get burned down fast.

Advanced sensors is great on them for sure. I much prefer it over FCS because they are far more difficult to pin down

HLC vs Mangler: HLC is far and away superior. Try it out for yourself, but that extra attack die is way more valuable than being able to shoot 3 dice at any range (and when I first started using IGs, I thought the mangler was better for that range 1 benefit, but it really isn't that important). Mangler is still okay on IG88B, because of his ability, but I wouldn't put it on any other.

Tracter beam + ion cannon is something to consider (at least on IG88B) because IG has 2 cannon slots, but I'd rather have an ion bomb I think. Haven't tried them yet though...

I have tried all kinds of EPTS and system choices for them: VI, crack shot, expert handling, lone wolf, predator & push the limit. Also FCS, adv sensors and SJ. I find predator to be the best overall EPT especially in conjunction with advanced sensors. Other choices are good, but pred + sensors gives you the best in terms of damage output + maneuverability. With autothrusters, I don't feel sensor jammer is as important, since its fairly easy to get range 3 shots quite often throughout a match. And FCS leaves you vulnerable because you are less maneuverable and susceptible to blocking tactics and can't protect yourself as well on red moves.

So my current two preferred builds are:

IG88B w/ mangler, predator, advanced sensors, autothrusters = 48

IG88C w/ HLC, predator, advanced sensors, autothrusters = 51

You can either sit at 99 for a bid against other IGs, or take inertial dampeners (I don't like them, because I find its always a bad idea to stress your IGs---I don't like glitter on them for the same reason, but YMMV)

Or:

IG88B w/ HLC, FCS, lone wolf & autothrusters = 49

IG88D w/ HLC, predator, advanced sensors & autothrusters = 51

100

IG88D is extremely squirrely. Boost with advanced sensors + his ability means he can actually arc dodge. Lone wolf on B helps survive on the k-turn/s-loop, as long as you keep both of them a part (not hard to do considering how they move).

Since they're the same PS, one thing you can do with one Mangler and one HLC, provided you can point them both at the same target, is burn shields down with the HLC then sneak crits through with the Mangler.

I like the first list. Unfortunately I don't own any Predators so they'll have to be replaced with VI and Glitterstim for now. Any tips as to how to maneuver my ships? More specifically, what are some tactics to keep the HLC-equipped one out of range 1? When should I K-Turn/S-Loop and when should I turn around (or is it always better to K-Turn/S-Loop)?

I'm still trying to get more experience with "BroBots" myself. But you can self-bump the HLC bot into the back of the other to keep him at long range, especially since Advanced Sensors means no action loss! As for the sloop/k-turn, I think one of the most important considerations is can you afford to be stressed next turn? If yes, go for it. If no, try a long maneuver plus boost to get out of dodge and swing around on a later turn.
