Two Noob Questions: Shooting Through Ships and Initiative

By Boba Rick, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi, I'm new to X-Wing. I was hoping you could answer two questions:

1) Can ships shoot THROUGH other ships? I know asteroids will obstruct, but will ships? I ask because I saw a video where a guy was talking about flying Ties in a box formation, and if you can't shoot through other ships I wonder why this is a good idea (how do the back ties shoot at anything?)

2) Initiative. In Imperial Assault, it changes every turn - does it change every turn with this game? Initiative doesn't seem to be as big of a deal in this game. Please clarify?

1) Yes, ships can shoot through other ships, no problem.

2) No, initiative does not change each turn.

Yes you can. You can shoot through astroids as well they just give the defender an extra green die. There's one upgrade that lets you treat Large ships, like the YT-1300 or Lambada as obstructing an attack.

No it doesn't, and unless you're dealing with ships with the same PS on both sides Initiative doesn't have a huge impact on the game.

Ships can be shot through... you have to pay for the privilege to Obstruct shots (Tactical Jammer, a 1 pt. Modification available for Large Ships).

Thanks everyone.

So it seems that BLOCKING line of sight is really rare in this game.

That's correct. Three dimensional space represented with two dimensional models. Not to mention all the computer tracking they have...

Blocking line of sight entirely NEVER happens in this game. If a ship is in range and in your arc (or you have a turret), you can shoot it. It just might be harder to hit due to extra green dice it might gain.

It's worth noting that obstructing attacks in X-Wing does not mean preventing attacks. You can still shoot through asteroids, but the defender will receive the benefit of having an additional evade dice during their defence roll

Also note that when it comes to obstructed shots it either is or it is not. Shooting through two obstructions is just like shooting through one; there is not a defense bonus from each of them.

With the notable exception of huge ships where one of its sections can block line of sight to the other section there by preventing you from shoting that section even if it is in arc and in range... And in rare ocations if you are at the right (or rather wrong) angle you can be prevented from shoting at a huge ship compleately when one section is out of arc and LOS to the other is blocked by the first one.
