Brainstorm ideas for future non-ship expansions

By Conandoodle, in X-Wing

good people,

I trust we're well.

There are, and have always been, a few posts floating about discussing future waves. A majority of these posts focus on ship expansions. I'd like to collate your ideas on possible future expansions that do not involve fighters.

Let's begin now.

I'd like to see scenario packs. These might include turrets, freighters, containers, large ground based targets (ion cannon, shield generator, etc). Each pack would contain a piece (or pieces) of objects, associated rules and a handful of scenarios for using them.

Examples might include 'Bombing run'. Player 1 must destroy shield generator with ordnance. Player 2 must stop him/her. This would encourage more diverse and creative list development as player 1 must have an ordnance carrier and escort, player 2 has to prioritise targets (destroy escort or bomber). This would also mix up play style a little and maybe add some variance to the deathmatch style games.

Alternate terrain would be pretty awesome. First one that comes to mind is inspired by the co-op campaign (which is awesome.)

Have a space station that replaces your 3 obstacles. It'd have a few turbolasers on it that can be targeted and destroyed. My main suggestion would be to make them range 1-2 instead of 2-4 like the campaign. This is just for balance's sake though.

Surface playmats with associated scenario bits.

Hoth with plastic walkers, turrets and a generator.mini packs for snowspeeder and one for at-st.individual additional AT-AT.

Jakku with wreckage models . mini pack expansions for TIE-sf and quadjumper.( this could also be a rey pilot card dispersal)

One with a scummy flavor...

Ord Mandel-

Who knows what scummy goodness goes with it.

Squad points to add more obstacles to the game.

Tech in metagames where all the players are bringing tiny rocks

I'd like them to sell alternate pilot packs. I'd like to have the option to use some of the already released pilots with other ships (x-wing versions of Tycho & Corran for example) and/or have the unreleased characters from the Rogue and Wraith Squadron books show up. If the entire expanded universe is up for grabs, then I'd say to add a couple cross-faction characters such as a Rebel version of Soontir Fel (from the X-wing comic) a Scum version of Mara Jade (as a crew card or Z-95 pilot card) or Imperial versions of the rebel aces in their youth (If I remember correctly Tycho, Hobbie, and Biggs were all TIE pilots before joining the Rebellion).

I'm not sure how I feel about cross faction pilots. Thematically, it would be too weird having Tycho in a dog fight with himself. I understand that time is all messed up here (Porkins can fly with Poe) but having a young version and older version of pilots against each other is just too much.

I understand Boba is an exception but I think this was a case of the game evolving and growing beyond FFG's original scope.

Different ships however, I can get begind that idea. It just means our naming conventions change a little. Instead of Corran, he'd be E-Wing Corran or X-Wing Corran .. E-Corran or X-Corran.

For some extra theme goodness to having different ship cards, I think they should include a Whistler astromech upgrade with any version of X-Corran

I can see your point that cross faction pilots would a bit weird for most cards, but I would still have liked to see Scum versions of Han or Lando. Mara would probably be the most challenging for people to accept since she was the Emperor's Hand, then a smuggler, and finally a Jedi (hitting all three factions). She would probably need distinctly different versions of her abilities for each version. Her Scum version should counter Luke's ability, while a rebel version should compliment it.

I like the suggestions you and Rabid came up with for terrain; however, I don't want to spend $100+ for a space station that I could just simulate with a Raider or Corvette. Velvetelvis had a good idea of combining your scenario pack idea with a new playmat. A space station or Death Star trench that comes with gun towers and a thermal exhaust port... I think I'd like to see if a Luke/Biggs/Wedge or Luke/Han combo could make it to the exhaust port before Imp-controlled turrets and TIEs wipe them out

Agreed. $100 is too rich. I was thinking the $30 price range. Terrain piece, rules, 6 scenarios. That is all.

But you do hint at an interesting idea in that last sentence. It could be a possibility that these scenarios could offer single or co-op game play. Eg. Death Star Trench run. Single player or Co-op. Take control of some X-Wings and Y-Wings and fly against automated turrets. Get off a lucky shot to hit the exhaust port. Win!

I'd also buy in for a campaign book that was loaded with FFG art.

yeah, $30-40 would keep it accessible for the majority of folks and hopefully give them enough profit that they'd want to keep making more.

100% agreed. We have to remember that these pack would be optional for game play. Unlike new expansions that may sell just because of an upgrade or two that comes packaged. We all love Autothrusters but Starvipers .. not as much. We stiill buy it though.
