Additional Resource Generation

By Kakita Shiro, in Strategy and deck-building

So, we started playing the Saga Expansions at the FLGS this month. Right now my table is Thorin/Gloin/Nori, Gimli/Dain/Oin, Legolas/Elrohir/Elladan with Eagles, and Merry (T)/Pippin (L)/Elrond leading Ents (which is me) and we crushed A Shadow of the Past.

However, it was brought up that because my deck has both Steward AND Horn of Gondor, resource acceleration for half the table is difficult (the team with Thorin is probably okay though). So that leaves me looking for a new means of generating resources for my deck. Right now, I'm looking at Love of Tales, but are there enough Songs to make this worthwhile? What else could I do to get a bump?

EDIT:

Because these are not all my decks, I cannot change their contents or their hero line-ups.

Elrohir is the best target for Steward of Gondor. That way he can also get Gondorian shield on him and defend like a beast with all those extra resources.

But that's not your question.

Both tactics and lore do not excel in resource acceleration, and the first thing that pops in my head is what I did...

I used Bifur in the campaign to nick the resources from Frodo.

This will mean switching heroes tho, but it works like a dream.

Tighten Our Belts is a really great resource generating card, especially in multiplayer where it doesn't hurt as much if one player spends a turn holding back their resources.

You can also try some of these cards (some of them work in combo, like the recent Elven-Light and Arwen hero) :

Heroes (starting threat: 65)
Amarthiúl ( The Battle of Carn Dûm )
Arwen Undómiel ( The Dread Realm )
Bifur ( Khazad-Dûm )
Glóin ( Core Set )
Mablung ( The Nin-in-Eilph )
Thorin Oakenshield ( Over Hill and Under Hill )
Théodred ( Core Set )
Allies (3)
1x Glóin ( On the Doorstep )
1x Zigil Miner ( Khazad-Dûm )
1x Envoy of Pelargir ( Heirs of Númenor )
Attachments (8)
1x Heir of Mardil ( Celebrimbor's Secret )
1x Ranger Provisions ( Across the Ettenmoors )
1x Sword of Númenor ( The Dread Realm )
1x The Day's Rising ( The Antlered Crown )
1x Miruvor ( Shadow and Flame )
1x Gandalf's Staff ( The Road Darkens )
1x Keys of Orthanc ( The Voice of Isengard )
1x Resourceful ( The Watcher in the Water )
Events (11)
1x Gaining Strength ( The Steward's Fear )
1x Legacy of Númenor ( The Voice of Isengard )
1x Tighten Our Belts ( The Nin-in-Eilph )
1x We Are Not Idle ( Shadow and Flame )
1x Wealth of Gondor ( Heirs of Númenor )
1x Desperate Alliance ( On the Doorstep )
1x Elven-light ( The Dread Realm )
1x A Good Harvest ( The Steward's Fear )
1x Hidden Cache ( The Morgul Vale )
1x Keen as Lances ( Escape from Mount Gram )
1x The White Council ( The Dunland Trap )

I'd swap Gloin and Dain so the Gimli deck could get resource generation. The first deck still has Thorin.

and I'd let the Legolas deck have Steward of Gondor.

I'd also suggest you take on the Victory Display events so that everyone gets access to Keen As Lances.

You're playing Ents, so I'd think Treebeard would be enough, with the Horn being a nice bonus. Steward definitely seems like overkill. It's not like Ents are particularly expensive.

You could also trade Merry for Mablung. He's a solid option for questing or Shield of Gondor for defense and has the resource acceleration that you'd like to see for Ents. Though I do realize he'd mess with your threat lvl and engagements with Pippin, so maybe not the best option.

Also, any deck running A Very Good Tale should be including Hidden Cache.

And make sure anyone that can play leadership cards is including some Ranger Provisions

The current changes I'm contemplating are:

-3 Steward of Gondor

-1 Horn of Gondor

-3 A Good Harvest

+3 Love of Tales

+2 Song of Battle

+2 Song of Wisdom (for Merry)

If I can get the other players to play Durin's Song and Song of Kings, I think it might be enough to make Love of Tales carry it's weight.

Keep all your cards and just add share-the-wealth cards such as Parting Gifts and Errand Rider.

It's like you went to Hall of Beorn and searched for Resource Generation.

Yep!

why don't you just include 3x errand rider and give your resources to your allies?

How does Elfen-light give you resources?

How does Elfen-light give you resources?

When playing it with Arwen hero : discarding a card gives Arwen or Aragorn a resource.

yea, but if your spending that resource to play Elf-light then you are just getting a card. Elf-light doesn't generate any resources on its own. Any card from your hand can be discarded for Arwen's effect - so EL really isn't a resource generating effect. It is a draw effect though.

You can also try some of these cards (some of them work in combo, like the recent Elven-Light and Arwen hero) :

Yep!

The entire list is every card that generates a resource. I'd suggest spreading them out to those decks that can best utilize them. In 3-4 players, Steward and Horn should not likely ever been in the same deck unless you also have ways of sharing resources with your companions - such as they have Bifur and/or you have leadership and use events and allies to shift resources to them.

Edited by Slothgodfather

I'd like to reiterate that I cannot alter the other decks.

I understand that. But since it seems like it's a consistent group, I'd suggest that you suggest they could add certain cards (any of those from the list) to increase their resource generation. However, if they don't want to add them, feel free to keep Steward/Horn and just go to town.

. or play Legacy of Númenor on them a few times... they'll understand...

Just as a side note, I read the Amazon sort of preview to Flight of the Stormcaller and if IIRC it says it will include a Leadership resource acceleration effect. I wonder what will it be, and hope it's not like Sword of Númenor.

You realize almost the entire list is out of sphere or changes my hero lineup, right?

Steward of Gondor is out of sphere for your heroes too... I see Vilya and a Good Harvest... If that is how you're playing Steward, that is how you can play an alternative resource gain.

I think adding errant riders as awp suggested is a nice fix. If you're going to take what is likely the best resource generation in the game, and not share the wealth, it's going to bump heads with any other deck as this card is going to always be contested between pickup groups. These can be paid for with Elrond even without good harvest. Really I don't see Steward doing that much for the deck considering you need to combo together different cards to play it.

Horn of Gondor shouldn't really be in this deck either... I doubt you want your guys to die very much, or even expect to let them die as you have Elrond, Warden of Healing, and Wellinghall Preserver.

You know what you should REALLY be using for resource generation in this deck? Friggin Treebeard

That's what you should be running. That, and some card draw to make sure you get him out. With that you shouldn't need a convoluted grab at Steward of Gondor, or a Horn of Gondor that won't fire a single time if your deck plays well.

replace

2) I'm already running Treebeard, but I suppose a 3rd copy won't hurt.

A 3rd copy, and instead of steward and horn, card draw to help get the cards you want out.

This isn't in your deck yet, but would give you 2 draw for 1 resource.

You can also consider Gléowine from core set. The character is unique, so there is a chance of bumping heads, but not as much as Steward. It's not the most efficient right off the bat, but the longer the game goes the more efficient it gets.
