objective card for beginners.

By Spazz1985, in Star Wars: Armada

Ok i have the basic mechanics down for the game, however the objective card confuse the hell out of me. Any suggestions for what objetive cards to use as a beginner.

There's no really simple answer, however, BiggsIRL has a great set of primers on Objectives - Both his original thoughts and in the Wave 2 World... I'll see if I can rustle up links.

Got it.

Definately look at his choices of objectives, and WHY they are there in certain lists...

Some objectives are more straightforward than others... Others give basic score additions... Some have escalating additions based on how many times you complete it...

I have videos in the works. They will be up as soon as I can get them there.

I am doing a single video per objective so they they can each run about 10 minutes at most (5-7 if I can help it) and will include basic strategy and information.

No amount of guide reading will answer all your questions - I'm still struggling over exactly which objectives I want to include in a certain list and have been playing for a bit.

I started trying to go down the list of objectives, looking for "forgiving" examples, but really the more I play the more I go back and think that all previous impressions were completely wrong. Enjoy figuring them all out, it's just as much part of the fun as figuring out how your VSD moves compared to the GSD.

Guide reading is not the best way to get information that is for sure. Testing and finding out your style is a great way.

I am still running with the theory that the High Risk, High Reward Objectives will be used most for tournaments. These objectives are Superior Positions, Fire Lanes, and Precision Strike. Next to them are Dangerous Territory, Contested Outpost, and Most Wanted.

I personally have strong opinions about the other objective cards not listed.

Cards like, Minefields, Hyperspace Assault, and Fleet Ambush are nice in the right list but they do not offer any mitigation in the instances you lose ships or squadrons.

Intel Sweep is good but has an issue inherent with the objective which is that it can go either way depending on if the opponent knows how to counter or not so it is not consistent.

Opening Salvo is just a bad objective in my opinion and is just there to stop you from winning as much.

Advanced Gunnery is not as good as it used to be due to Ackbar led MC80's. . .

I think there are some great guides out there e.g. BiggsIRL, which are really helpful to give you a flavour of something to consider when playing certain objectives. I enjoy reading them.

But even if you run the exact same list and exact same objectives as in the guide, there is no guarantee that your plan will go as intended or that your opponent will do what is expected. That's why the game is so great! Especially now wave 2 has opened a ton more crazy combinations.

Best way to learn is get first player and roll a D3!

When I started my friend and I just randomly drew one, then next game drew from the 11, 10 and so on until we played them all.

When you are learning the game it's indeed better to pick out a random objective or a scenario you want to try out because it sounds cool. The outcomes are so different that it's really worth doing so you can actually see how it affects the gameplay :)

I remember really wanting to use Fleet Ambush with my Rebel Fleet, then as soon as we were deployed it was pretty clear that it favoured close range oriented fleets that have the ability to tank a few shots :P

Found this out the hard way on the weekend. :P

You'll find that some objectives are just too good for your fleet, and so your opponent will discard them immediately (Advanced Gunnery used to be a prime example). Taking these objectives is often a good way of guiding your opponent to choosing the "easiest" one, and knowing this you'll be better prepared.

(and if they don't choose the "easiest" one, it'll likely be to your benefit anyway) ;)

Straightforward objectives:

RED: Advanced Gunnery

YELLOW: Contested Outpost

BLUE: Superior Positions or Dangerous Territory
