keeping track of Wounds

By Strylith, in Game Masters

How do you guys keep track of wounds on NPCs? I can track up to 4 at MOST with out any writing health, and only if they have relatively low health. No more the 15. So what tactics do you guys use to track NPC wounds?

A piece of paper and a pencil....

Hash marks, you know, 4 = IIII, 5 = IIII

I have more trouble tracking strain

I usually GM with a small whiteboard for drawing extremely bad maps/diagrams, tracking initiative, recording wounds and strain, etc. Or I use scrap paper, or directly onto the print out/hand written sheet with my generally custom adversaries when the Adversary Deck doesn't provide the threat I want.

okay sounds good. I was just curious.

My PC's use tokens (cheap poker chips actually), White for Strain, Red for Wounds, Blue for passed boost die, Black for passed Setback die.

I use pencil and paper.,.

I have a notebook for this purpose. I write across the top of a paper 1 entry for each NPC. An NPC might read W 0/10 S 0/8. The NPC has 10 Wound Threshold and 8 Strain Threshold. When he takes some strain, I cross that out and write the updated entry directly under it. If you have multiple copies of the same NPC, try numbering and placing a physical representation of the number next to the NPC on the table (if you use props).

We track Strain and Wounds for PCs and NPCs with beads or tokens (one color for strain and another color for wounds). I have a lot of essence beads from Exalted 1st Edition, so we use either that or tokens a player brings.

I use Evernote loaded up with my NPC du jour and utilize checkboxes for Wound and Strain. If for some reason I'm not operating digitally I just use hash marks.

For minions I'll use hash marks as whafrog said on a scrap piece of paper for big battles (I find I'm able to memorise it alright in small skirmishes). Nemesises usually get their own little handy card I can scratch off (although with the march of technology I've been taken lately to using form-fillable character sheets on a laptop and making the adjustments as necessary).

I use paper and pencil for each Minion group, Rival, or Nemesis, and separately track Wounds and Strain for each of them. I do not currently track boost or setback dice, but I probably should.

This is honestly the reason why I used to rely on minion groups a lot when running Star Wars. :V

Now that I'm doing an extended campaign that's not really an option for me, so I grabbed the NPC cards from the Resources page and I'm going to print out a bunch before each session. I'll fill in some with the enemies I foresee the party encountering, and leave others blank to scribble in hastily when the game goes off the rails and they try to rob the shopkeeper.

C'mon guys no need to re-invent the wheel here.

Just write the enemys on a bit of paper put their wound/Strain threshold next to the name and count up /or down your preference until the enemy is dead. #Firstworldproblem

Let us all please remember that there are people venturing into RPGs for the first time here without the knowledge and experience that some of us have.

I use Oggdudes most excellent encounter generator, or a scrap of paper.
