Hobbie and Targeting Astromech

By JaySolaris, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Please can someone confirm the timings of the above interaction?

If Hobbie pulls a k-turn, the Targeting Astro grants him a target lock but that won't trigger his ability as the stress token won't be assigned until the 'check pilot stress' phase. Therefore no action and Hobbie has to wait until the combat phase to spend the target lock and shed stress.

Am I right?

Hobbie:

When you acquire or spend a target lock, you may remove 1 stress token from your ship.

Targeting Astromech.

After you execute a red manoeuvre, you may acquire a target lock.

Stress is added at the check stress substep of the Execute Maneuver Step - so it happens during the execution of your maneuver (see page 4 of the Rules Reference)

The timing instruction for TA is AFTER you execute the maneuver.

So the stress is added - then TL acquired - then stress removed - then proceed to the Perform Action Step

Funkleton's got it, but since I already had it pasted in, here's the applicable text from the rules reference:

2. Execute Maneuver: Resolve the following substeps in order:

a. Move Ship: Slide the maneuver template between the front guides of the ship’s base so that it is flush against the base. Then pick up the ship and place it at the opposite end of the template, sliding the rear guides of the base into the opposite end of the template.

b. Check Pilot Stress: If the maneuver is red, assign one stress token to the ship; if the maneuver is green, remove one stress token from the ship.

c. Clean Up: Return the maneuver template to the pile of maneuver templates. Place the revealed dial outside the play area next to the ship’s Ship card.

Targeting Astromech triggers after step 2 is complete, so the stress is already there to be removed.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think in the old rules it wouldn't have worked that way as the check stress step was a separate step to the execute maneuver step - so in that instance TA would have triggered before check stress, not after as it does now.

So it's quite understandable that people are still figuring this one out

By the way JaySolaris - will we be seeing you at the next Store Champs tournament?

They're holding it at a new Wargaming and Hobby Show at the BIC on the 20th of Feb.

Correct me if I'm wrong ...

You're dead on.

Thanks all for your replies. That's a pretty nice combo, I like the idea of Hobbie pulling k-turns with impunity!!

Funkleton - You certainly will, my ticket has been purchased!! Now to decide on a squad......

Good man!

We were a little concerned that the BIC's saying that floorplans had to be submitted well in advance of the show would hurt bookings for the tournament - as we usually get 8-10 people show up on the day when we hold a tournament in store - but we're up to about 20 out of a possible 32 so it's not looking too bad.

There should be some good prize support on offer as cog-o-two have offered to pitch in with some prizes, and I'm going to donate some Bandai Star Wars model kits and maybe a couple of ships I've got going spare.

Tell your friends lol!

Sounds like it'll be great fun! I will definitely mention it to friends, see if I can get a few more along!!

I've run Hobbie with TA a few times now, and it works a treat. Effectively gives him a white K with two actions; great economy. Sure, its situational, but for those times you're in the furball, and some ships will be pulling a K to come around for another pass; being able to do it unstressed with a TL and focus can give you the edge.

Played a game the other night at my FLGS where I lured away a Black Squadron TIE, getting hime to come after me. Once his was on my tail, I pulled the K, and came back and TL + focused. Caught my opponent completely off-guard. Then let loose with the Torps. Goodbye TIE.

Hobbie's only down side is the middling PS5 and lack of an EPT. In the era of low PS TLTs etc, PS5 isn't such an issue as you'll still often shoot first against many ships, and the space you need to pull the K should be there. Hopefully, a long-hoped-for 'Rogue Squadron' title might fix the EPT issue.
