Organized play announcement...

By Fuzzywookie, in X-Wing

I'll be honest and wonder how no one caught it sooner. I mean handsize should of been a dead give away. Someone should of noticed he had a lot more cards in his hand then the other people did.

As far as why...

I learned a lot about cheaters when I helped run some online tournaments for XvT and JK back in the mid 90's. Big things with sometimes 1000+ people playing, so we had a number of cheaters.

Part of what I did was track down people posting fishy scores and investigating it. What seems to me, was that some people believe if they can get away with it, then they deserve it. The fact that there's nothing on line doesn't factor into it.

They aren't doing it for the prizes most times, they're doing it because they think they're smart enough to get away with it, and since that's true they deserve the victory. It's often less about winning and more about proving they're smart enough to fool everyone else.

That can happen in this game based on how many cards, resources, people have been playing and using. There is no maximum hand size in Conquest.

There is no maximum hand size in Conquest.

Oh ok that would make it harder. The only LCG I play is Star Wars... Although I am looking forward to the L5R LCG.

So... This isn't about an x-wing match? Just FFG organized play in general?

Yeah I've played them all but Conquest was the only one I played from before release so I was sad to see this cheating being done at it's first really large event.

Yes this policy applies to all organized play events.

so.. next tournament we all have our ID-papers ready, else get thrown out of the zeppelin? :D

LOL : early in the video, during the intro, the commentator says "...he unbelievably dominated his top 4 game..." - I guess we know why now. Sheesh....

The commentary that is in the thread the video is posted in shows where to slow down the video and look at his draw. You can see him setup up the pull and then quickly pull 3 off the top and make them all into one before putting it into his hand. You have to go to full video and (use the gear icon) slow down to .25 speed and you can watch the pull and how many cards it contains.

If you dig a little further, he goes on to try and defend himself, gets another forum member to support him, then forgets to switch his profiles and posts with the wrong account and gets caught sock puppeting.

They also found out that he did it once during his draw in the semis, which means he got excited and greedy during the finals (did it 3 times). We don't know how many were affected by this (did he do it during a regional* to get a bye?) and that sort of stuff but the publicity of the infraction is warranted to prevent his inclusion into other gaming venues.

They had to create the rules for dealing with this kind of event because he is literally the first person to do this at FFG that has been caught at this level.

yeah Conquest.

and the subsequent

"this is from him"

I can see trying to cheat if winning will give you much needed money to feed the family or something.

But to cheat at x wing is just to feed your ego. What a idiot. He deserves to be ridiculed to tears.

Edit - Hmm not x wing but if there is no cash prize why even consider cheating? Seriously.....

Haha John Payne Peirce Paterson or whatever your name is!

Put him on the no fly list too, and revoke his diplomatic immunity!

... Wait, no that's a little harsh. Danny Glover, don't shoot anyone. We're just gonna not play against this guy, or any other cheaters!

Perhaps his insistence on playing on a mat labeled "Above Board Games" threw everyone off his trail.

Ahhh, the irony.

"Above Board Games"? That was a local store that shut down a few months ago. Glad to see it, to be honest. Didn't like that store. They charged for table usage. Big tables, like 6x4 (for Warhammer or such) cost you 6 seats per hour.
