I'm a Star Wars fan first and a gamer second and so I'd be very disappointed if the announcement was made and I therefore knew I'd never get my hands on lovely models of ships from the upcoming films and hopefully at some point prequels.
No new ships...what would you think/do?
I'd be a little disappointed that a couple of others I was hoping to see will never get made.
On the other hand, I think that would allow me to feel less bad about investing in the ships that I don't care as much about that still help fill out a list.
If they stopped, I'd buy more of the stuff already out. Once I owned all I could reasonably use, I'd play huge Epic games all the time.
What's stopping you from doing that now
I still need me some boats. Gunboats and Missile Boats.
Don't forget the Skipray
I play almost entirely old games systems apart form xwing which havent had a new mini or supplement for over a decade.
I dont need to be spoon fed a new toy every month to keep me interested ![]()
I just use my own imagination to write my own campaigns/scenarios etc
Even with just OT ships i would personally feel i had enough 'material' to replicate star wars games for as long as i can imagine myself playing the game.
Like you know they have not made a warhammer 40,000 'squat' mini since the mid 90s... doesnt stop me having games of 'rogue trader' (released as a set of rules in 1987) with my mates.
I can see it being a massive issue if you gaming style is entirely based on pick up games at FLGS and tourneys as you'd lose your gaming community but if you play with a lot of mates into star wars and do mainly narrative/scenario play i cant see why you would stop playing
TBH a lot of the new stuff is getting less and less appealing to me. Imperial Veterans looks quite nice, as does the ghost. But im not amazingly excited about the mist hunter or the jumpmaster (visually, im sure the rules make them great) but then to me i have a preference for the ships we've seen on screen. I can take or leave the EU
I still need me some boats. Gunboats and Missile Boats.
Don't forget the Skipray
Once more, with feeling:
...if they can make the K-Wing look awesome, they can make anything look great...
Except that the K-Wing looks like absolute crap and doesn't look at all like it belongs in Star Wars. Plus, the ship came from a critically-reamed book trilogy that took place a looong time after RotJ.
Honestly, as one of the old-school (i.e., older people who actually saw all of the OT in the theater) fans around here? I could absolutely do without dredging up the most obscure EU lore ... and then having some designer at FFG try to fit it into the game.
And I do not understand the need for a TIE Avenger when we already have the TIE Advanced. According to those (insanely awesome!) X-Wing/TIE Fighter/X-Wing Alliance PC games, it's the same ship. The game designers just cut little sections out of the solar panels. That's all.
...although I would have liked to see the "fix" for the TIE Advanced in a set that wouldn't set me back $60-100, especially since it comes with another goofy, made-by-FFG mini-Destroyer that I would never use.
Anyway, I literally only want to see the Imperial Assault Gunboat. For those of us who played those X-Wing/TIE Fighter games? It was a huge part of the experience ... and **** near iconic. It's a shame FFG has passed on the Gunboat for so long in favor of some of the other stuff the company has released.
But after that Assault Gunboat arrives? Yeah, it would be nice to think FFG just looks to TFA and beyond...
Actually, th K Wing, AND the Gozanti were both in the Star Wars ship and technology technical readout book from the 80's. So even though the K Wing was only ever in books, it was canon for quite some while. Wish I still had my technical readout book.
Nice to see balance is in peoples opinions.
Game is incomplete unless Empire get 4 more craft...complete then, sod the other two factions.
Not a single post above yours said that and one of them was even asking for a Scum ship.
I am with Gadge.
A game doesn't become bad once all neccesary expansions are done, new stuff ceases to be produced or production has stopped entirely.
In fact to me it makes it more appealling since there isn't any armsrace to make anymore - completion is a realistic goal.
For this reason FASA Crimson Skies Classic is still my all-time favourite game, as it was basically completed with its first expansion and by then completely balanced out.
I don't have to be "forced" to keep on buying to find a game enjoyable...!
And if X-Wing'd stop after "REBEL Veterans", to balance out the X-Wing, I wouldn't mind at all. There'd be still millions of card-'and upgrade-variations to try out, so that the game wouldn't become boring...!
The Scum faction (and maybe the Rebels) need access to the Raven's Claw (the replacement for the Moldy Crow).
The Raven's Claw was a significant upgrade over the Moldy Crow that Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors flew in the Jedi Knight series.
If the Moldy Crow remains untouched (no upgrade treatment in a future expansion) then FFG should bring the Raven's Claw to the table as a more maneuverable Moldy Crow with more damage dice for the primary weapon and probably lose the turret (the Raven's Claw didn't have a turret) in exchange for a cannon upgrade, bomb upgrade, and both native boost and barrel roll actions.
I still want prequel ships, along with everything that has already been mentioned. The Star Wars universe has technologically stagnant for about 30,000 years(3000, at least), so a First Order TIE fighter wouldn't be significantly better than Naboo starfighter.
I wouldn't mind seeing snow-speeders and atmospheric vehicles either. You'd just have to assume the battle was happening in a planet's atmosphere rather than in space. Episode 7 had nearly zero space combat, so it doesn't seem like that big of a problem to me.
I think AT-ATs and ground combat would be cool, but I worry that it will change the game too much.
You see i'd rather see a ground combat expansion or new game that shared some of the mechanics than have them release a ship that someone mentions in conversation in some obscure novel that 'Bo Shek beat hans kessel run in'
You know?
Like to me a 'flightplan' type game with snowspeeders, ATATs, shield generators and defence turrets would be 1000 time more 'star wars' to me than dengar in an asymetrical ship.
Given that i saw this amazing hoth battle with ATATs and snowspeeders in the best film in the OT where they duke it out for a good while.... dengar on the other hand looks grump on the bridge of a star destroyer for 3.5 seconds...
I'd rather they just keep X-Wing, X-Wing and release mission and flight plan related scenarios and add-ons.
Air to surface combat is boring and very one sided unless they write in convoluted AA or make something competent.
I'd have to totally disagree. there used to be a game by *i think* west end games which was a cardcounters 'battle of hoth' with snowspeeders and turrets versus at ats and it was a cracking game. One of the speeders was luke and could 'use the force' to improve his hit rolls and that was secret from the imperial player until the ability was used.
Long time since i've played it but it was a fantastic game. Hex based iirc.
I see no reason why weaving around lumbering ATATs in snowspeeders would be any less fun in 1/270 scale. Equally having imperial eweb units, speeder bikers etc etc trying to knock out rebel bunkers with tie bomber air support would be great.
edit: here we go a pic of it... it was a fantastic game even if its not that 'visual' now if it had been made with decent pre painted minis it would have been even better.

Many of you lot disgust me with silly words like bloat and obscure.
This is a living miniatures war game.
If the releases stop coming then the game also stops evolving.

Just try something out:
Explain the core rules thoroughly to a beginner with boardgame experience. And THEN make ALL Wave 1-8-ships and upgrades available to him to write a working 100-points-list in, say, 20 minutes time. All by himself alone. Surprise him during the game with the FAQs you didn't mention before. Basically use the whole pool of recent publications in that introduction game.
You'll have a high chance of losing that player right from the start due to "strategem overload", just because he can't lift this recently having become more and more essential part of the game.
Another group of newbs will be lost after the game because they couldn't make their shinies work properly.
(This approach works wonders if you really DON'T WANT people to play the game, I can tell you. And it also gives you a feedback on how boardgame players outside of the system see it.)
There are enough threads already out with questions on how to approach the build-up of a new players collection, which is a good warning sign for "bloat in progress" in a game.
A good game has to have easy to grasp rules and handling but hidden depths to explore in execution. Just adding more and more stuff to it doesn't make it better, it just makes it more complicated...

You mean I'm not alone?!
Seriously, why can't you live near me? I haven't been able to play that game for years and all my fighters are getting dusty. ![]()
Yeah pity that! ![]()
Recently I've found thrushes nesting in my TAR Peacemaker engine bays...!

Sorry to break it to you... But this is absolutely untrue.
In the 80s, the only ships from this game that were in any Star Wars reference books were the following: (1) the ships we actually see in the OT films and (2) the Z-95 Headhunter from "Han Solo at Star's End."
Edited by Harlock999I wouldn't really mind. I would like to see ships from Episodes 1-3 and 8+ (and the spin offs) but I could live with X-Wing being mostly about the Original Trilogy. I do like the idea of having everything without having to buy a load of hideous EU stuff. Ideally though, and I think I speak for everyone here, they'd keep going but only release things I like.
Nice to see balance is in peoples opinions.

What does it matter how many ships are in each faction?

Lol that's a silly comparison.
Chess is a board game that was never ment for expansions, sure you could argue that the X-wing core set is a complete experience but that does get boring very quickly.
A better example would be to point out a table top wargame that stopped making new miniatures and continues to grow despite the lack of new stuff coming out....
I can't think of any...
dude,,,note the smiling face i was being facetious.
I was not being entirely serious.
However if you think about it people are constantly coming up with new strategies for games that have existed for centuries without needing 'expansions'.
Chess is actually possibly one of the first 'war games' of sorts.
I think its a shame if you really think that new stuff is necessary to enjoy the game.
Honestly i do.
I imagine you probably stay awake at night worrying about 'meta' and stuff like too eh?
Seriously, its a spaceship game with toys we move around, the fun is in playing spaceships you dont need a constant fix of new bits of plastic to validate or improve upon the previous pieces of plastic you bought.
Seems im not alone in considering chess a form of 'war game' or even 'miniatures game' to a degree.

Edited by GadgeI still play Battletech. And I haven't bought a 'mech or sourcebook since (the original) 3050. In fact, a good chunk of my collection are "the unseen."
So, yeah, I don't think I'd get bored with this Star Wars dogfighting wargame if FFG discontinued making (OT-era) ships.
I love Star Wars, and I love gaming.
I'd just rather X-Wing (classic, not TFA and beyond) went out with style. Rather than continue to plumb the offensive wastes of the now-abandoned EU.
Again, the Imperial Assault Gunboat is literally the only thing I feel is worth waiting for...
And that's... bad...?No no no no!!

Of course it's bad if the game becomes stagnant.

Is that how you would introduce the game to a new player?
I have successfully introduced a number of my mates and some randoms from my local game groups to this great game.
I don't start with 100 point tourney rules, I start with the core set (1 X-wing, 2 Tie's) and go from there.
Logic.
Having lots of options is not "bloat" it's options.
If X-wing had stopped after it had all the OT ships then where would we be?
Tie swarm Vs Fat Han Vs B-wings
Boring!
You may not like it But having lots of different options is FAR FAR better for the over all health of any game than only having a few options.
