How good are TIE Defender based squads?

By wilsont, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Just recently got a ton more ships and got a second Defender and was looking at building a squad based on Defenders but not sure where to start with them. Any thoughts?

This probably not too viable, may be fun to try

DEFENDING VADER

100 points

PILOTS

Darth Vader (35)
TIE Advanced (29), TIE/x1 (0), Veteran Instincts (1), Engine Upgrade (4), Advanced Targeting Computer (5)

Delta Squadron Pilot (33)
TIE Defender (30), Ion Cannon (3)

Delta Squadron Pilot (32)
TIE Defender (30), Flechette Cannon (2)

Defenders are currently one of my favourite ships to fly, but generics tend to be not all that viable (compared to other ships of the same cost).

However, once Imperial Veterans comes out, Defenders will be so amazing that I wouldn't be surprised if everyone and their mother wasn't flying the durn thing.

I currently enjoy using one named ace Defender, and another named Ace pilot.

If you get two cheap aces, you could even fit all three into a squad.

Ex:

Vessery (36) Total: 46

Predator (3)

Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Omega Leader (21) Total: 26

Juke (2)

Comm Relay (3)

Academy Pilot (12) Total: 24

Gives you 4 points to play around with. You could, for example, push the HLC down to an Ion, and make the Academy Pilots Black Crack fighters, or some such.

But, yah, seriously if you haven't already, check out the (unreleased) Imperial Veterans pack, and it promises to be everything Defender fans ever wanted (and more).

I've had a few recent test runs with Vessery using Wired and four FO's. I think it has potential.

Currently I run three Onyxs with Mk 2 engines. It's important to shoot before the tlt swarm.

I am looking at the following list for when Veterans drops;

MAJOR CARNAGE

Col. Vessery

+Veteran Instincts

+Tractor Beam

+Twin Ion Engin

+TIE/D Title

The Inquisitor

+Push the Limit

+TIE/v1

+Autothrusters

Carnor Jax

+Royal Guard TIE

+Stealth Device

+Autothrusters

Massive synergy in the list. Inq takes a target lock to evade but this benefits Vessery who shoots first dropping defenders agility with tractor beam (+ free TL), if done right Carnor prevents tokens being used also for massive effect then Inq. and Carnor fire in to the same target who now has -1 agility for MAJOR CARNAGE... Any opinions?

I like pairing Vessery with two TIE Advanced with ATCs. You can season to taste, but having two ships that are incentivized to keep their target locks synergizes well with Vessery's ability. For example:

  • Vessery (44)
    • TIE Defender (35), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1), Calculation / Veteran Instincts (1), Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
  • Commander Alozen (31)
    • TIE Advanced (25), Engine Upgrade (4), TIE/x1 (0), Calculation (1), Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
  • Lieutenant Colzet (25)
    • TIE Advanced (23), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1), TIE/x1 (0), Advanced Targeting Computer (1)

For now? Pretty much unplayable.

After Veterans?

2x Tie/D with Ions, hell yea.

Not very viable right now, but when Imp Vets comes out, this list is all i will be running.

3x Onyx Squadron Pilot w/Tractor beam and Tie/d title.

I've tried it on vassal, it murders small ship lists.

There are a few good threads in the battle reports area of the forum.

I'm very into Vessary with FOs at the moment as the source of cheap target locks makes him very efficient.

I think Glaive Defenders with Juke and the x7 title will also be very promising once Veterans drops.

At the moment, running Vessery as a wingman for anyone who you expect to regularly get target locks is always fun (ATC Vader, Redline, OL, etc).
