Roleplaying a power droid

By A7T, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The way I see it, Power droids are more than walking generators. They are also repair droids (they diagnose systems to find the causes for power outages etc.) Therefore I wouldn't roleplay a power droid any different than an R2 droid. He has built-in equipment, like a retractable arm, that interface thingy, and a holoprojector (to display his diagnosis to a repair crew.)

I've just read a great story hook on wookieepedia:

Allegedly a fringe group of power droids have set up a religious cult and want to proselityze/solicit funding. If your power droid plays the guru of said cult (or his second-in-command,) you could play a droid Entertainer with a couple of devoted fans among the droid (or even meatbag) community.

This happens because nobody bothers to wipe the power droids memory regularly. Because for most denizens of the galaxy they are just walking generators or ammo boxes.

Have him play a bomb...

The whole thing could be a set up... of the bomb...

I would have gone with Andy.

I would try and find some way to incorporate some kind of other functionality. While it might be kind of novel trying to challenge yourself, I think that playing a armless, voiceless character who's sole purpose in life is to provide energy might get a little old after a bit. I would bend the original concept and at least include some R2-like functionality.

Why not playing as Boxy, from Futurama?

If for one would relish the chance to play a power droid. I would insist that the GM create an incident for me in the first session that would spark a sense of sentience, self awareness, and empathy within me and roleplay the **** out of it.

After the first session I would add modify my chasis with arms and a translator. As my personality developed I may even try to transfer my consciousness into a new body. Possibly one with synthetic flesh to appear human as well.

I had an entire all-droid campaign planned out that I was never able to get players for. Not sure if I still have all my notes on file.

Actually, that sounds kind of cool. Go find 'em and post 'em!

So far no luck finding the detailed notes.

It was going to draw story bits from Bladerunner, Ghost in the Shell, Metropolis, and a dozen other sources, and the various "droid emancipation" breadcrumbs lying around in SWTOR, and so on.

It would have taken place in maybe the corporate sector, or someplace where expanded droid technology made sense. Companies using recovered/stolen Gree and Rakata tech. I would have gone much further into the technology of droids... droid "minds" as transferable and copyable, upgrade and repair parts, the actual implications of memory wipes, etc.

There would have been droids that go "rogue" -- both legitimately dangerous, and those who just want to be free -- hunter-killer droids programmed to go hunt them down, a slowly-growing "droid underground railroad" for those trying to escape, and so on. Eventually a full droid revolt might have fomented, with the PCs at the fulcrum... with the outcome depending on whether they chose to help put the liberation movement down in an orgy of burning alloy and circuits, join their "brothers" and overthrow the "meatbags" in bloody slaughter, or find some less-bloody middle ground.

That sounds like a fantastic campaign.
