Roleplaying a power droid

By A7T, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

This is perhaps the most serious question that has ever been asked on these forums ever. How would you stat out and roleplay a power droid? I know what you're thinking, and yes, I'm being completely serious. I ask this because, within canon, some have been assigned genders and perform task other than the one they were designed for. For example, EG-86 operated as a courier for the rebellion and EGL-21 was a manumitted power droid who worked as a welder on Jakku. Not so mindless after all, especially when you see one screaming in pain in EV-9D9's torture chamber.

Have a Wookie companion who talks like Tim the Toolman Taylor and constantly talks about how this droid needs more power? I think I'd be amused :)

How about this for a character? A hyper intelligent power droid who is crippled by his ability to speak any language other than Gonkian.

Maybe he's overclocked and that's why he has language problems.

Is it an EG-6 or a GNK?

Does it understand Basic (or other languages) speech / text, or is it both unable to speak and understand anything but "gonkian"? Could it output Basic text as R2 does while plugged into Luke's X-wing?

Is there a reason it can't get an upgrade, some kind of speech module or text output screen?

I don't believe either an EG-6 or a GNK really have any manipulators or a SCOMP arm in order to link into a computer. He can understand Basic, but the people around him can't speak Gonkian. Unlike an astromech droid, they assume he has no personality whatsoever, so they rudely order him about with no consideration for his well being or anything.

You could make him a spy. The Energy droids are never suspected, so he could go pretty much anywhere. Maybe he has a scomp installed and is a slicer. Or he's an assassin...

Would allow you still walking around most of the time going: "Gonk! Gonk! GONK, I say!"

This is an interesting one. Droids are usually very clearly defined by their function, which, for a power droid is to "give energy". It is something the droid will either love or hate, and with further development and lack of memory wipes, develope 'quirks' around. For example, if the energy droid learns a bit too much about physics, it may decide that giving people energy all the time in various forms is a good thing. This can translate to a career as cook, if beneign, or serial killer if not...

Just a few thoughts XD

Roleplaying a power droid? Whatever gets your gonks off..

The EG-6's wiki entry mentions an arm.

I don't think it would be difficult to RP, but I wonder if it would be...fulfilling or not.

A good RPer can fit into any role, and droids at least have a form of sentience, so it's really about RPing your limitations as other see them. 75% of this will be overcoming communications problems, with the remainder being thinking about ways to avoid combat (in which you will be a blaster magnet).

I think it would be more entertaining to have such a role as an occasional NPC rather than a PC. If the goal is to experience life as a non-class-4 droid, being an astromech will gain you much of the experience with infinitely more utility.

It's kind of a fascinating thought experiment to RP a non-standard droid, really. Some of the most fun (and most character development) was when playing a messanger droid model who went from "Obey Master" and "Messages must be delivered" through the complete mindwarp that is "You are free now" to "People charge for messages" and finally "Delivering this message may mean I deliver less messages in the future. What do?". Something so completely rudimentary as a walking power coupling can end up a LOT of fun if you're willing to toss it outside its element a bit (which is prone to happen in an RPG, really).

I had an entire all-droid campaign planned out that I was never able to get players for. Not sure if I still have all my notes on file.

RP!? Strap 4 linked starship scale blaster cannons on it's back and walk around like a Behemoth from Battletech.

Can you say "gonk"? You should be fine. I assume a power droid PC is modified to be different from the factory stock. I mean, otherwise all you are is a walking generator. Technician or Engineer Mechanic would be where I would start if you want to stay mostly in line with what their original purpose is.

But anything is possible. Mount a VX sidewinder on a mechanical swivel and you are a walking gatling gun. Mount some rocket packs (jetpack equivalent), a net gun and a blaster rifle, and some denser armoring and you have a power droid Gadgeteer. And so on.

But if you serious finish an entire campaign and only ever say "gonk" in-character you would deserve some kind of award.

So it does. Thanks!

The closest I ever came was playing a character who never showed any hint emotion. I was able to finish the entire campaign without so much as cracking a smile or raising my voice while in character, and that was **** near impossible.

Actually doing "gonk" or "groot" and nothing else... that's a challenge, to say the least.

I wonder if you could make "gonk" like "dude", and put a ton of meaning into the inflection and tone...

Saying gonk an entire campaign might be hard. I would maybe opt for like a limited vocab. I played a Stone Age game where we only knew six words and we had to use only those six words to get all our points across. That was fun. You could do something similar, varying inflection to denote moods.

It really is all about how you say the words, not the words you say, heheh. Vin Diesel did something like 30-50 takes for each "Groot" that ended up on screen. Same things with the moans and growls of a Wookie or the beeps, blips and bloops of an R2.

I did one game as a Wookie and just moaned, groaned, growled and roared my way through it. The rest of the communication was just basic pantomime or other body language (glowered with my good eye, wide-eyed shock at such a claim, finger to the throat for kill, kill, kill...), heheh.

In my Rebel campaign the Astromech player is currently using nothing but this to communicate with the group. He uses the soundset under characters R2-D2. He knows them intuitively and it enriches everyone trying to figure out what the Astromech meant. We also have an interpreter of some sorts. My little brother plays a malfunctioning law enforcement droid (callsign DR3-8IN, what he's called in the group you can figure out) he can of course understand him. So I sit them always next to each other and they whisper together how o enrich the scene. If a player gets the talent "speaks binary" then he can of course understand the droid. I did not enforce this as a GM, my players wanted it so themselves, and the Astromech player has great fund using his tablet and the small bluetooth speaker he took with him.

Actually, that sounds kind of cool. Go find 'em and post 'em!

Have him play a bomb...

The whole thing could be a set up... of the bomb...

They basically look like a giant Samsonite case on legs, is there a Heavy in the party who needs their Missile Tube carried around?
