I just figured it was a side effect of his new predictive algorithim that turned his palm red.
I've always liked it when Threepio is able to talk his way out of situations in the books. I bet he could get captured by those Imp-wannabe's and manage to escape.

I've always been curious about whose voice that was ("Who are you?"). Conventional logic says it was a Stormtrooper, but it has the tones of Frank Oz.
