R7 Astromech wording clarification

By JediSmurf, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

Recently tested out the R7 Astromech card and my opponent raised some concern over how I was interpreting the wording

Apologies if this has been asked before , I tried looking but couldn't see anything ....

The wording for his card states:

you may spend the target lock to choose any or all attack dice

My query is ... Does Any = any 1 dice or any combination e.g. Multiple dice

It's not exactly clear ... Unlike another card (Wired elite talent) this is worded :

you may reroll 1 or more , much clearer :)

All help appreciated , thanks

You decide how many dice

For example

I attack you roll hit hit crit blank

You can choose for me to reroll the two hits and crit

Or

I roll hit blank focus

I have no focus so you decide to reroll one hit

Not sure what your opponent was saying, but this is the correct way

I mean says right on the card "any or all"

Do as the card says not what it doesn't

If it was intended to be just one it would have specified that.

I mean think about it, how vague would that be?

You may choose any or all of the attack dice. So 1 or more. Keep in mind that you are modifying the attack dice before the attacker, so whatever dice you force him to reroll, can't be rerolled again when he gets to modify.

Thanks for the clarification.

I was sure I was right in saying its 1 or more but my opponent questioned it and it made me question my own interpretation of it ...

Thanks

Just do as the card says

Not what it doesn't

Everything else that works this way also allows you to choose zero dice to reroll (Hobbie might conceivably want to spend his Target Lock even if he didn't need to force any rerolls). This one's wording seems against that, but it might just be a rules templating issue.

It occurs to me that R4-B11 has the same "any or all" wording, and I know I've used that on zero dice before, to move Drea Renthal's Target Lock away from a ship she was about to kill. If it turns out to be a minimum of one die, I will owe somebody an apology.

I'm pretty sure the FAQ specifically mentions that you can choose zero as part of "any or all" at the same time it mentions you can spend a focus token and not end up changing any dice.

Edit:

FAQ P.4 under Spending Tokens.

When attacking, players may spend target locks and choose to reroll 0 attack dice.

As expected, zero as a valid choice for "any or all" confirmed by Frank.

In response to your rules question:

Rules Question:

Can a pilot with an R7 Astromech and a target lock on the ship attacking him choose to spend the Target Lock and force a reroll of zero dice? For that matter, can R4-B11 force the reroll of zero defense dice?

Yes. Since zero is a number, an ability that lets you reroll/modify any number of dice, it can be used to reroll/modify zero dice.

Thanks for playing,

Frank Brooks

Pretty vital for Drea attacking with TLT to be able to choose zero here. For example, attacking a Bandit that has 2 Agi you get three hits on your TLT attack...you can choose to spend your TL and move it over to the next target. Just the answer I was looking for!
