Dusting off x wing. Are older lists still competitive?

By oddeye, in X-Wing

A list I few about a year or so ago (and won every game I played with it) is now even better:

Garven, Biggs, 2xBlue

Give your x-wings a 1 point astromech of choice and IA and one of the Blues the E2 title and Jan Crew card. Biggs with a focus and an evade every round!

Good to know I'm not the only person who likes that list.

This list does really well in a swarm meta. It would be a bit harder to play against an agile aces list. The right dial work and use of those B-wings would be the key.

Agreed - agile aces are probably its biggest weakness - but you can use the board edge to cover one flank, force the angle of attack by moving slowly and keeping Biggs close, and hard 1-turn the B-Wings to cover the your exposed flank as the aces move in.

Will it work every time ? No

Does it have a plan to deal with them? Yes

Overall it's a solid, nicely balanced list that can force choices onto your opponent that they don't want to make

TIE Swarm has not been a thing since the Phantom.

It's only starting to become a thing again because of Crackshot.

The TIE Swarm has always been a thing. But the Phantom meant that it wasn't the _only_ Imperal thing.

No, the Phantom completely took them out of the meta pretty much. Fat Turretwing lists drove that nail in even further. Post-Phantom nerf they didn't recover.

People like to pretend that Swarm is this boogey man that you have to account for when list building. It's really not. Out of the few dozen players in my area I'm the only player that runs 6 or more ships regularly.

Fat turrets are weak against swarms. Except Dash, who in my experience struggles with arc dodgers but annihilates swarms.

Can't say I agree with the statement, really.

Boost is a tool that allowed them to not only competed, but even prevail.

boost on PWT and Autothruster on boosters are the "I don't give a **** about paper-scissor system" upgrade, hence they are so obvious and popular

Sounds like Jousters need an upgrde that screws over arcdodgers... somehow.

Tractor beam might work... 4 Daggers with tractor beam, where if one has arc, it pulls the arcdodger to where others have arc...

To make the paper-scissors situation fully reversed, yes

But the mainstay problem is "you still have to get the dodger in arc and hit him"

with secondary problems being "Turret has joust value of naked B-wing" and "Seen Soontir? He can outjoust tie swarm of same cost"

that's... weird, don't know how FFG is going to pull that trick.

Having played a few 'heroes of the aturi cluster' games, I can agree with this. X-wings are amazing ships mid-to-late in a campaign when you can stack 2-3 modifications and 2-3 upgrades together.

actually most things become more than competitive with stacking EPTs

take Firespray for example.

Borderline funplay, can be kitted for some very narrow thing (like Fettigator that makes pasta out of aces) but costs like a truck and isn;t cost-effective

Slap 2 EPTs onto it and in minimal cost increase it becomes monstrous.

so your statement IS true, but not only for x-wings, just for most high-cost pilots.

I like the T-65; call me old-school but I like how it flies. Reminds me how the P-40 (Flying Tigers) was reported flying. Takes a hit, delivers a hard punch but does not turn well versus the Zeros. So, the pilots had to get creative.

Here is my build that I have working with:

Bwing: Keyan Farlander with Elusiveness and FCS - 33 point

Bwing: Ibtisam with Elusiveness and FCS - 32 point

T-65: Wedge with R2-D2 and Swarm Tactics.

I try to fly Wedge off to the side trying to lure the opponent to follow. Have the B-wings arrive at the same time Wedge does a K-turn, or flank the ships in pursuit. Big key word: TRY. When this list fails me is when I miss judge a turn, take too long setting the trap, or the dice just fail. (stupid green dice)

I have a question about Keyan Farlander he has the ability when he attacks if he rolls eyes he can then change them to hits by removing a stress token. If I add "B-wing/E2 and Kyle Kartarn. When Keyan attacks and removes a stress token by changing an eye to a hit, does that trigger Kyles ability and gives the B-wing a focus token? It doesn't say Kyle's ability is limited to green maneuvers, but I'd just like to make sure. How good is Autoblaster? It makes hits that cannot be cancelled by defense dice. At what point in the attack does Keyan's ability change his eyes to hits, is it compatible with Autoblaster?

I just got back into the game as well. No one in my area seemed to be playing, and now all of a sudden my local shop is running a store tournament in a couple of weeks. It's exciting... But now I have to catch up and buy a bunch of ships. I stopped buying right before Most Wanted, because it seemed like the game was dead in my area.

But it's back, and I'm thrilled. I'll be running with kinda outdated stuff, but I don't even care. I'm just psyched to be playing again.

Note that Keyan can always spend his stress token during an attack, even if he didn't roll eyes.

Lukes Bigg Wedgie is entered in the HUGE mini-league, which kicks off today. I'll keep everyone posted as to how well he does. Well, I'll probably wax poetical about the whole thing in a big ass wall o' text thread of it's own. I'll get two replies and people will think I'm some sort of opiate mushed vaudevillian. It's gonna be awesome.

Yes, Keyan receives a focus token that way. It's difficult to find something to do with it though, a focus doesn't give a very good defensive boost on a B-Wing and Keyan's attack has already taken place. But if he is flying next to Jan Ors crew, you could turn it into an evade.

Note that Keyan can always spend his stress token during an attack, even if he didn't roll eyes.

...Yeah, I'm gonna do that Keyan/Kyle + Jan thing on a list now. I like the way that sounds. And it's an idea I already have all the cards for! (Doesnt happen often these days. Boy I gotta get caught up)

Please do, I really want a first hand account of everything about this list: What the list is, who was flying, how well they flew, if they normally win tournaments etc.
