Looking for plot hook advices: Exiled/Bad Reputation Obligations

By kingpin000, in Game Masters

Hi there,

for the next session I rolled the obligation for the Human Diplomat/Agiator. He has 5 points in Exiled and 5 in Bad Reputation.

His background is that he was an imperial officer (no military training but a lawyer like in the US Navi JAG Corps and tv show). As he became frustrated of not being promoted in the time frame that he desired, he deserted and became a Black Sun mobster instead, but during his biggest deal, he was busted by the Empire. In the first session the droid PC was send by Prince Xizor to free him and the other PCs from prison and support the resistance group on Corellia because of the imperial bio-weapon incident on Falleen which killed most of Xizors family. Xizor also send other agents to support other resistance groups...

After some adventures of the group to build up a reputation on Corellia to get into ranks of the the resistance, I rolled for the last session his Duty (Support the Rebellion) and I gave him the opportunity to defend a resistance cell leader in the Corellian supreme court against the imperial DA (his ex-wife, civilian lawyer employed by the Empire) and the Moff. He won the case, the group is finally member of the resistance and now I am at the point I mentioned at the beginning.

Any ideas for obligation plot hooks?

Well if he's known to the Empire I would assume the Moff would be rather sore about losing a case against a suspected Rebel, so he'd look up dirt on this defense lawyer and find out he was an Imperial deserter and a member of Black Sun. From there it's either blackmail (Plant evidence convicting the Rebel of some other crime so I can nail him on that) or he calls the Empire down on them.

Never roll obligation or motivation randomly. Ever.

As much as that somewhat makes sense, it works better let the players pick their obligations and motivations. It gives them much more control over their backstory.

I had the thought that the Moff could offer him a new job in his desired position but he has to spy out und betray his new friends for some time (which would remove the Exiled) or he refuses and the pressure of being Exiled increases the value. Maybe some kind words of his ex-wife could bring him to a place between a rock and a hard place.

As much as that somewhat makes sense, it works better let the players pick their obligations and motivations. It gives them much more control over their backstory.

Note: I don't GM a sandbox!

I use it as plot hooks to devolp the next adventure. I talk with every player about they backstory and try to place the players input about the character devolpment in the story as much I can.

I think he means that he rolled on the table of existing Obligations for the party, and the Agitator's obligation was triggered for the next session.

Excatly

Lawyers have bad reputations. As soon as someone recognizes the PC is a lawyer, social checks against them become more difficult because they think the PC is going to try to trick them.
