The Fire Lanes card says:

Setup: ... the second player places the 3 objective tokens in the setup area beyond distance 4 of both players' edges...

The setup area is the 3' by 4' middle part of the battle space.

Are the "edges" the edge of the battle space (ie, the table) or the edge of the deployment zone (ie, beyond distance 3 of the edge of the table) ?

"Both Players Edges" are referring only to the Long Board Edge.

So they must be within the 3'x4' middle part of the Battle Space, but more than Distance 4 from both Players Edges...

Which, essentially, means the area involved is the area not within Distance 4 of a Long Edge, or Distance 5 of a Short Edge.

It just seems very close...

The positioning of Fire Lanes tokens is actually a big part of the Strategy with that objective...

Wherever you place them, you are starting to telegraph your moves...

Place them too close to your own edges, and yes, you'll claim them for the first couple of turns (which is not much different than say, Contested Outpost), but you will generally fly past them, and then its up to where you move, and how quickly your opponent can bear down on them (and you) .

Maneuver can be trick, as landing on them gives them to your opponent.
