Unconventional Lightsaber Hilt Suggestions.

By Jack of All Trades, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

It's almost time for my character to build his first (and second) lightsaber hilts. We found some lightsabers in the prison on Dathomir. I plan to take the crystals from them and build my own hilts. The attachments I plan to use are extended hilt, superior, and paired.

I read about some of Luke's students using unconventional objects such as rancor teeth and speeder bike throttles. I really like this idea and I want to use it. I'm having a hard time thinking of ideas that fit my character though.

I like the idea of using the door handles of an ancient Jedi temple or archive as my hilts but my character is from Nar Shaddaa and I doubt the Jedi had a strong enough presence there for this place to exist.

Suggestions?

Prehaps it has leather bindings, which were from a Twi'lek slaveguy/girl you fancied's Leeku? Could be a parting gift, or something the character took as keepsake after a fatal accident took the cared for individual away. http://www.coscouture.com/twilek-cosplays/ - first picture, look at the leather Leeku bindings to give you an idea of size feasibility, would work well with an extended hilt, and give your character something personal to hold on to.

Or it could have the "earrings" as part of the ornation of the hilt?

I would be a bit concerned as a GM with letting an apprentice level character create a superior hilt right off the bat, but if it floats at your table all the more to you :)

How about a flight control stick from a fighter?

This sounds like a fun exercise. Can you tell us a little more about your character?

It's crazy that you suggested this but my character wá recently forced to Mercy kill his Twi'lek girlfriend. She'd been experimented on by some Imperials. She had some scars on her forehead and an implant in her brain. She only spoke in gibberish and he couldn't sense even the normal force levels felt in all living things in her.

A code cylinder that has some meaning to your background.

The cylinder your parents (who you murdered!) ashes where originally stored in... If your a Darker PC.

The wrists of a Protocol Droid.

Fuel, Water or Gas canisters.

The hilts from a pair of Family Heirloom Ceremonial Daggers.

Banther Femur bones from a dead family pet at their hobby farm.

This sounds like a fun exercise. Can you tell us a little more about your character?

Here goes.

My character is a 19 year old Niman Disciple from Nar Shaddaa. His father was kind of a grey Jedi,in the vein of Qui Gon Jinn. He didn't always follow the code and frequently didn't see eye to eye with the council. Particularly when it came to attachments. He fell in love with an officer from the Sector Rangers. Eventually she gave birth to an illegitimate child and he left the order to be with his family.

With his father as his teacher my character learned the ways of the Force. His father didn't adhere to the strict Jedi code. He thought his son the value of love and family.

His parents were killed during the Great Jedi Purge. He spent about a year on the streets of Nar Shaddaa before joining the Sector Rangers as a cadet.

His commanding officer is a former clone who fought closely with the Jedi and deeply regrets his actions during Order 66. After seeing my character's performance during training he was able to recognize his abilities and identify him a Force Sensitive. Rather than report him to the Empire he kept the information to himself. However, with the Sector Ranger's impending absorption into the Imperial Military, he was forced to discharge my character in order to protect him.

My character then hooked up with a couple dishonorably discharged recruits from the Sector Rangers turned bounty hunters on Nar Shaddaa. During his first mission he received a distress call from his partner and on again off again lover. They were being arrested by the Imperials. She left behind a datapad encoded with her tracking beacon. Her signal headed toward Dathomir.

Since we started playing we've had a giant continuous adventure where pirates forced us to steal a slave carrying cargo ship. After freeing the slaves and delivering the ship, we came across an incorporeal sith and who possessed one of our crewman and brutally killed the pirates. During the conflict the Empire showed up and arrested us for piracy.

The possessed crewman who was detained in a different room killed most of the Imperial and damaged the ship. We managed to get on an escape pod before crashing and descended to the surface of Dathomir. We discovered the ship had crashed into the Imperial Prison.

A full scale battle was going on in the prison. Dead Sith possessed guards and prisoners attacked anything living. While making our way to the hanger we checked the records and discovered that my ex-girlfriend was considered dead. A failed experiment of some kind sealed in the lowest levels of the prison. Whatever was going on their caused the guards to lose control of and abandon that level.

When we finally reached the lower level we found her there with a giant automaton made of scrap weapons and droid parts she used it to take over the level. When I approached her she had a giant scar on her forehead and a cybernetic implant in her brain. She could only speak gibberish and even though she was breathing I couldn't sense any trace of the Force in her. So, I activated one of the lightsabers and put her out of her misery.

Since then we met an Oracle in the prison who advised me to let go of my conflict. She told me that the Jedi were meant to die and that I would be a part of something new that would relace them.

After the Oracle refused to escape with us we finally made our way to the hanger and after a crazy fire fight with Imperial reinforcements, we stole a ship and escaped.

Definitely use those tails!

Do you have your mums pistols? They could be the source of parts for the Lightsabers

No, I tried to get my GM to me buy a Nova Viper with my starting credits as my Mother's service pistol but he decided that it was too good of an idea and should be a reward instead.

I actually really like the idea of lightsaber decorations and I'm definitely going to be stealing some of the suggestions in this thread!

As for the OP...

For Jedi characters making a lightsaber is a big deal. It's the culmination of their training and commitment to the Jedi (In whatever flavor they follow) and as such can serve as a symbol of everything that led the character to that point. To reinforce this, I would suggest that you think of three major milestones in your character's past that had a serious impact on them and then consider what sort of artifacts or talismans they could incorporate into the saber to reflect those events.

The Twi'lek girlfriend's leather lekku bindings are a great idea. Another one could be their holotags from the Sector Rangers wrapped around the handle or hooked to the base of the hilt, or some sort of small keepsake left to them by their parents.

The most unconventional saber I've come up with is a basic hilt with a removable glow rod (flashlight) attachment and a genelock. Disguised as a high-powered flashlight, it doesn't draw any undue attention from Imperials or their informants. Even if the Imps got their hands on it, the genelock mod would prevent them from actually igniting the blade.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but I don't think you have the right idea of an "extended hilt". The bonus it provides is from using two hands for extra leverage, so you shouldn't be getting the bonus if you're dual-wielding 2 of them.

See this image: Extended Hilt

Trying to dual-wield a weapon with such an extended hilt (clearly meant for two-handed wielding), might actually be grounds for a Setback die. Though that's dependent on your GM.

As for lightsaber hilt ideas, there are quite a few possibilities. In "The Clone Wars" series, a wookiee used wood in the construction of his hilt. At least one Jedi was known to include a Krayt Dragon tooth in his lightsaber hilt. I could also see a Jedi born on Mandalore to make a hilt from mandalorian iron, in respect to his ancestry.

That is a very long hilt. I'll definitely have to drop that attachment and pick another one.

Also I don't think I'll be adding Superior right away. It's pretty expensive.

Well you could always use Cortosis in your lightsabers construction, making it immune to Sunder. You could even add something similar to cross-guards made of cortosis, I'd give a Defensive 1 for HP 1 (though that's up to ur GM).

One made of ice? Or maybe obsidian?

Mechanically I suppose that would increase the difficulty of checks made to disarm you?

I've also always wanted to see a rapier-style lightsaber hilt.

Lightsabers are already immune to sunder. Though I think the rules are referring to the blade. Cortosis would probably make it immune to the "Two triumphs to break their weapon" option.

Maybe i'm hugely unoriginal, but if I was building a laser bonk stick i'd probably use the casings of tools.

Might be because I find the idea of a bright yellow or orange hilt funny.

I like this -- it's both personalized and functional.

OP -- depending on what sort of feel you want for your game, there might be some instances in which these customized hilts cause penalties in combat due to being completely unsuited to the needs of holding onto a weapon.

Put all the workings inside a blaster pistol. Like a Belgian grip for fencing, and the perfect disguise.

One of my player suggested disguising the hilt as a dildo. I thought she was joking, but she was not. She kept it in her satchel and most people that searched her were too embarrassed to examine it closely.

That's not how the force works.

To a dark place, that line of thinking will go...

One must be EXCEEDINGLY careful with the activation stud on that thing...
