Duty and Awarding It

By arunwe2012, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Hi all,

I've been recently struggling around the concept of Duty and how to award it. I am reading Onslaught at Arda I and apparently you only gain duty if your duty is triggered at the start of a session and you successfully complete a mission related to your duty.

My concern is that way it will take ages to reach duty 100 for my group since our games are very spaced. Do you award extra duty for doing stuff for the rebellion even if it's not related to character's duty? as a reward for well-playing, for example.

Doing things in line with the PC's duty should gain that PC more Duty. So one with Resource Acquisition who finds a couple of crates of Stim Packs in the back of an Imp Lambda they just took down would receive Duty if they return those creates to the Rebellion.

I suggest looking at each PC's Duty and coming up with a list for each of little things to drop into encounters for the group to find. Often these should be unrelated to the primary goal, and sometimes will actually make achieving victory harder.

You should also try and Role Play their commanders reaction to their efforts. If they did something selfless and brave but rewarding then give them praise. If they stole from innocent civilians or the down trodden then they probably cop a bit of flack.

In that respect, the triggered event(s) of a Duty roll are supplementary rather than primary. They add the occasional unexpected objective - maybe one that would never have been part of the scenario otherwise.

I play it by awarding Duty on this formula:

  • Complete a mission - everyone gets 5 Duty
  • Your Duty was triggered? - another 5 Duty
  • The mission suited your 'very particular set of skills' - another 5 Duty

I haven't play-tested this so much, but it does mean that with a large group you're ticking off those Contribution ranks rather quickly. Probably good for if you don't see each other often.
