I do kind of get the OP. I've yet to come to even consider leaving (and/or leaving a goodbye note), but I've had some breaks from this cesspit for other reasons.

I'm not convinced it was meant as an attention seeking post as such, but I do think it's a futile gesture. This being the interwebz and all.

I don't get the whole drama here... Granted I was away from the forums a few weeks myself but I don't get the issue here. What I see now are some of the worst offenders of guilt tripping, trolling, baiting, thread hijacking, "hey it's my opinion man even though I've made this unnuanced and inflamatory point 100 times before and am literally not adding anything new to this conversation yet again I demand respect"-posting, all of a sudden putting their chips in with KnasserII and demanding things, which seems fundamentally absurd.

I have not found a single forum in which an Ignore function does not strike me as petty and childish. It's the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting "lalala I can't hear you" rather than exercising maturity and actually ignoring their posts yourself.

That and there's always that guy who can't help but remind people constantly that he has certain people on ignore, often when he suspects or knows said people have posted in the thread.

You know it shows you who's posting in the thread, even if you have them on ignore, right? There's no "suspect" about it, it says "you ignored this person, they posted in this spot"... and when those posts routinely come right after yours, doesn't that ever make you start to wonder if maybe they're a bit more bothered and hurt by being ignored than they'd like to admit? I've found over the last 20+ years online that the sort of people who earn the eternal timeout are also the sort of people who cannot STAND it.

When the subject of the ignore function comes up in a thread, should people who do use it never say anything, for "fear" of the sort of accusation you're making here?

When you do tell someone "enough, we're done", and yet they keep coming at you over and over, it's wrong to wonder aloud if they understand what a simple world like "ignore" actually means? I've seen people who have a door slammed in their face continue to stand there and scream at the door for quite a while, and the way certain people react to being *plonked* strikes me as quite similar.

The grown-up answer you should have learned in grade school is to actually ignore them instead of taking every possible opportunity to talk about how you're ignoring them and they totally aren't getting to you.

Except that I haven't actually done that... outside of the one thread where happened and it was obvious that he was either ignorant of what it meant, or just hoping to provoke continued response out of pettiness and I was still kinda ticked at him for being such a raging d-bag (it's not like I gave up on him for being a nice guy or just for disagreeing with me), and here where I mentioned it in the context of the the ignore function.

It's funny how a couple of mentions became "every possible opportunity".

Or are you taking just his word for it... when what's been going on is that I've continued to discuss the subject we were discussing at the time and making reference to arguments that were made in the context of the ongoing discussion with other people? Does putting someone on ignore also mean that you can never, ever, no matter what, talk about whatever was being discussed when they earned it?

Nice job on proving the OP's point. The back and forth petty crap really doesn't help anybody, and if you're doing it just because it gives you the jollies to annoy somebody, then take a moment and reflect on that. How you act and react is a choice--just because it's the internet doesn't mean you have to be an *******.

Which always results in drama, because someone will always take offence or disagree, or proclaim: troll or whatever other accusation, which of course won't increase the level of discussion/throwing opinions about in a digital space.

I agree Jeger. But you and I are not thr ones writing a spiteful goodbye post about petiness (which in itself seems ironic, but that's fine). I think we are well aware of how tone, content and motivations can get a bit weird in online discussions. Which is why I stayed out off this topic at first but I then see posters who have been fanning the flame for a while now in multiple topics start the same fights, the same discussions and the same holier than thou bs that resulted in this mess to begin with.

It just seems so counter to what they claim their intentions are.

I'm still relatively new to the community, but I haven't found it to be too uncivil beyond the normal boundaries of online asshattery. YMMV, obviously, and I understand forum fatigue as well as anyone who has been Internetting for more than 20 years. (I'm a veteran of EVE Online. You don't know forum evil until you've delved into those deeps.)

What does bemuse me are the people (on both sides) who insist on drawing out a kind of meta-commentary about the OP's relationship to taking offense. This kind of navel-gazing isn't just toxic, it's also deeply weird.

Depends what you're looking for. /swr/ over on /co/ can be pretty good at times when it's not being trolled. They usually have new Rebels-related stuff the fastest, too. Rancorpit isn't bad either, if you have any connection at all to the old WEG line. I haven't posted on Star Wars.com in eons myself, but I recall it being pretty decent. Is it still up?

My only problem with putting people on ignore? That I always find myself curious what the hell they're spouting out this time. So when I ignore someone, that just means that it takes me an extra click to get offended. . . .

Ignore people? Why o why would I ever do such a thing? Even Erik at his worst never dissuaded me. I've much thicker skin than that. It is way too much fun reading stuff around here. And honestly there are few total A-holes around here. Some of you may be a little full of yourselves (and I count myself one of those), but at the end of the day we're all just people. Sometimes insulting, sometimes abrasive, and sometimes laugh out loud foolish. I remember when for some of us it was a badge of honour to end up on HappyDaze's Ignore List. Ah the good old days.

I've found the Ignore feature very useful for dealing with a couple of trolls hiding behind postmodernist wordspam so far.

Speaking of which, does anyone have suggestions for a place where one might talk about the Star Wars setting objectively and rationally and civilly, without a bunch of "a rainstorm is never just a rainstorm" nonsense -- and also where one would not be stepping on the toes of people who like the FFG system?
