Pettiness.

There's other communities, and if it comes down to it, folks will start their own.
It happened for WotC's Star Wars Saga Edition when they closed down the Star Wars section of their message boards. And I'm sure it happened when WotC completely shut down their forums as well.
Of course, with fan-operated forums, the killjoys tend to get weeded out since there's no corporate masters for them to be beholden to. If the moderators or forum owner of sand fan-operated forum don't like how a particular person is acting, out they go, possibly without any warning whatsoever if they've been particularly obnoxious.

For the most part these forums are good. Any time a thread gets too off topic or personal it is usually shut down. Doesn't happen often but once in a while.
This place is so filled with petty attacks, ad hominems and playground bullying, I'm done with it.
One more community member down, following others that I know left over time for similar reasons. Figured I would at least notify the community why I'm washing my hands of it all. It's simply not worth my time anymore.
Sad to see you leave and I sincerely hope I had no part in creating the atmosphere that pushed you away. I enjoyed your input, but I know what you mean. Personally I enjoyed the Spoilerific Super Megathread fiasco of 33 pages (that honestly should have been locked several times) but I've been to darker places in the net and my jimmies still stay unrustled.
And if we're trading stories, the Warmachine forums were truly toxic way at the beginning, before we had "beasts" and "logitech-elves". Each subforum for each faction cherishing their own brand of toxic. Most showered pure bile and disdain at everyone that played different armietypes than the gencon winners, because why would you play anything other then the best list? (Also, Meta doesn't exist and fun is for the weak) Aaaah...good times, good times.
Take a break, unrile yourself and pop back in. Also salt: getting upset about internet people who decided they dislike or enjoy ruffling your feathers...hardly ever worth it. But honestly, do come back
I advise just backing out of topics that go toxic and ignoring those posters that take them there. Trolls win when good posters abandon boards.

Which is why I end up just putting them on ignore.
I have not found a single forum in which an Ignore function does not strike me as petty and childish. It's the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting "lalala I can't hear you" rather than exercising maturity and actually ignoring their posts yourself.
That and there's always that guy who can't help but remind people constantly that he has certain people on ignore, often when he suspects or knows said people have posted in the thread.

I look at the forum ignore function as the equivalent of whatever one might do in real life to avoid interacting with a total d-bag in "meatspace".

Well I mean .... based on how often you still refer to me, my arguments, or the fact that you have me on ignore in so many threads indicates that you obviously want to interact with me. Otherwise you wouldn't continue to again and again and again refer to the fact that you have me on ignore. So if you obviously want to interact with me then I see no reason why I shouldn't respond to your post. After all, if you were really ignoring me then how would you know I've continued to respond to your post?

See what I mean? It's very reliable... I post something, and there's the troll sign, immediately after... I guess some people can't stand the idea that no matter how much noise they make, you'll never hear them again. Of course, it could all be coincidence, and all those posts right after mine are about something entirely unrelated. Anything's possible. I'm not quite so egotistical to assume that every post the troll makes in the background is about me, after all. ![]()
Maybe I should walk without rhythm, so as to not attract the worm...
Wait, no, that's an entirely different thing.

Well of course!!!! Because you don't really want to ignore me. People who are really ignoring me don't take the time to continue to post about the fact that you're not reading my post. They don't continue to make arguments against things I've said in other threads. They don't continue to reference the dispute. They simply move on.
I'm actually getting a kick out of counting up the number of times you continue to refer to me in your post across various threads despite your insistence that I'm being ignored. It makes me giddy that I get under your skin so much that you can not help but take a swipe at me when you think you can get away with it.

You know it shows you who's posting in the thread, even if you have them on ignore, right? There's no "suspect" about it, it says "you ignored this person, they posted in this spot"... and when those posts routinely come right after yours, doesn't that ever make you start to wonder if maybe they're a bit more bothered and hurt by being ignored than they'd like to admit? I've found over the last 20+ years online that the sort of people who earn the eternal timeout are also the sort of people who cannot STAND it.
When the subject of the ignore function comes up in a thread, should people who do use it never say anything, for "fear" of the sort of accusation you're making here?
When you do tell someone "enough, we're done", and yet they keep coming at you over and over, it's wrong to wonder aloud if they understand what a simple world like "ignore" actually means? I've seen people who have a door slammed in their face continue to stand there and scream at the door for quite a while, and the way certain people react to being *plonked* strikes me as quite similar.

The grown-up answer you should have learned in grade school is to actually ignore them instead of taking every possible opportunity to talk about how you're ignoring them and they totally aren't getting to you.

If I stand outside your window with a boom box blaring In Your Eyes will you take me back?
This thread is an Ouroboros of Irony.
This thread is an Ouroboros of Irony.
That's so beautifully poetic.
Nice job on proving the OP's point. The back and forth petty crap really doesn't help anybody, and if you're doing it just because it gives you the jollies to annoy somebody, then take a moment and reflect on that. How you act and react is a choice--just because it's the internet doesn't mean you have to be an *******.

To be fair in a thread about Pettiness something petty was bound to occur.
You get a petty, and you get a petty. Everyone gets a petty...
Was this thread about pettiness? I kinda had the impression it was more " Hey everyone look at me, I'm special" or some kind of Hamlet meets web forum posting. Maybe I'm wrong...
"Let me go to hell, that's all I ask, and go on cursing them there, and them look down and hear me, that might take some of the shine off their bliss."

I took it as a thread about how bad some of us are, which would naturally draw out the very traits that he claims he dislikes.
And flouncing. Also about flouncing. But yours sounds as plausible.

Nah, you're not which is why I didn't post until I saw something genuinely funny. Stuff like this really needs a lock, tbh. It has jack all to do with the forum, tries to guilt trip those it isn't even addressed to and make them feel bad and is really nothing more than a cry for attention and, if OP is a bit of an old hand, fishing for bans on folks who can't keep crap in a containment thread. It's really just stirring the pot for more drama. Farewell threads always are a bad idea unless they're literally "Hey, I'm leaving. You guys were great. Bye!
". Those are usually fine.

Until then, let's highjack this to talk about Samuel Beckett...
