Pettiness.

By knasserII, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

This place is so filled with petty attacks, ad hominems and playground bullying, I'm done with it.

One more community member down, following others that I know left over time for similar reasons. Figured I would at least notify the community why I'm washing my hands of it all. It's simply not worth my time anymore.

Sad to hear mate, hope you will find the effort to come back and ignore the bad stuff and focus on the good.

That's a shame, I've generally found this to be one of the more helpful places for this game's material. I think it's possible to filter out those that are bugging you.

Yeah, there are things that upset me, and things I don't like and even I say some pretty strong things at times, but I try to ignore the bad and carry on because of the useful nature of the forums, it's given me some sound advice over the past two years. Sorry to see you go KnasserII.

Don't blame you, really. I'd be a bit more taken aback by the atmosphere I've found here, but really, sadly, it's the internet.

Even though we've butted heads in the past, I still often appreciate your input, so the boards will be poorer for your leaving.

I don't know why you'd leave, though. The rancor is mostly only on a couple of threads, there are plenty of other threads that could benefit from reasoned input. Pettiness doesn't need to be responded to, not every comment needs to be addressed, and not every argument needs to be pursued to a conclusion. The first two can be ignored, and if an argument is at an impasse it's usually best to just agree to disagree and move on.

If only I followed my own advice... :)

Anyway, hope you will reconsider.

Gee, that's not been my experience here. Creative folk will have differences

Sorry to see you leave. Sure there's some trolling going on, but just leave those threads and enjoy the productive ones.

I'm not presently ignoring anyone via the built-in tools but I somehow seem to miss these threads and I'm left wondering how this can be so rampant as to be considered the atmosphere here. Most of the interactions I've had here are with good people that I would welcome to my table. Sure, I see people being jerks from time to time but nothing so blatant as to make this place seem hostile.

Or, maybe I've been on the internet for so long that my brain just filters out dumb?

I felt the same and so took a year away.

There are good posters on here - Desslok, whafrog, mouthymerc, 2P51 and Donovan (though we often disagree, he's civil, and actually makes good points) among others, but an awful lot of bad vibes too :(

We all presumably love the game and it's sad we can't agree to disagree.

Anyway, take some time off, recharge your batteries and pop in again sometime down the line.

I know I never post much, but do read through many of the topics. Sad to see you leave if you're making it permanent. Hopefully some time away helps recharge you and you come back. It's always good to have another view point on things and continue discussion and debate.

I know what is being talked about with the pettiness and the childishness. Whether you return, or stay away, all the best to you!

I have to ask: Was it me? I really have trouble with my grammar and my diciton sometimes. And how I use certain words. I have a rich vocabulary in english, which is the one thing I admire most about that language, but sometimes my german creeps through, and this can lead to friction.

So I hope it wasn't something I wrote, because I highly value your input KnasserII, even though we disagree sometimes.

Yes you can. There is an ignore/block feature. Some people utilize it to good effect.

Such as ignoring people like knasserII?

Yeah, that “ignore” feature has been working pretty well for me.

I've found the Ignore feature very useful for dealing with a couple of trolls hiding behind postmodernist wordspam so far.

Speaking of which, does anyone have suggestions for a place where one might talk about the Star Wars setting objectively and rationally and civilly, without a bunch of "a rainstorm is never just a rainstorm" nonsense -- and also where one would not be stepping on the toes of people who like the FFG system?

EDIT -- one of the trolls, however, continues to demonstrate his true colors by desperately trying to provoke more response from those who've clearly given up bothering with his pompous self-assured drivel.

I wasn't going to say anything, but if I made a thread like this and saw this post about me...

...I'd honestly find it pretty funny. I do like me some black humour.

Maybe not on the board for that very game? There seem to be plenty of boards out there for just fans, but this is a board for fans of the Star Wars game by FFG.

Try rpggeek.com, you'll fine almost anyone on there.

Yes, you see, that is why I asked the question.

Well this is the only Star Wars board i frequent, but maybe there are others that can suggest Star Wars fan boards to you. Or maybe do a google search. Aren't you a fan of TOR and do they not have their own fan boards?

I play SWTOR.

The forums there make anything I've seen here pale in comparison. If ever a place deserved the title "wretched hive of scum and villainy..."

The slightest question or concern regarding how the game does something or a change Bioware makes will be met not with the one or two people who respond with variations of the canard "If you don't like it, go away", but rather with a legion of them, resorting to the sort of verbiage and tactics that would make 4chan proud.

I like how you've taken your beef with me to other threads. :) :)

I've found these boards, for the most part, civil and overall enjoy them. There is a strong streak of dogmatic RAW orthodoxy and designer ex cathedra-ism in the water some members are drinking that can strike a condescending chord and put off people who like the game (a lot), but want to explore tweaking something that doesn't suit their table's gaming style. I've found that easy to ignore, or to shrug and walk away from.

That sucks. Probably why I choose where I post. I used to post over on the WotC Star Wars boards but found them unhelpful. Kind of moot now that they are gone anyways.

I've seen people come and go here for various reasons. Some just left because they moved on to other games. Some left because they didn't get the support of the community for whatever reasons for whatever "innovative" idea they had and felt picked on. Some of us have been here since the start up of these boards and have been critiquing the game since the beta release or before and some continue to do so playtesting for new source books. To many Star Wars is a black and white morality play. I can understand what it is like to have a minority viewpoint. Everyone will never always agree.

At the end of the day you have to decide if it is worth it to discuss things with people who are generally on the opposite side of the fence than you. For me I enjoy it, even if I don't always agree with them, because it brings a counter point for me to see. There have been plenty of times I could live up to my nom de guerrre and be insulting or personal but try not to (not always successfully).

I don't find that any more so than any other game with a focus. Unlike open tool boxes like GURPs or Savage Worlds, fans tend to look at any ideas through that game's lens. Whether it be Star Wars, D&D, M&M, or what have you. Start suggesting too radical a change and you run the risk of things coming apart at the seems. And those of us that have been here from the beginning can usually spot this stresses for what they are. No one is saying you shouldn't or can't make whatever changes you want, just that there are potential consequences. Some people don't like to see their ideas deconstructed. And yeah some people could possibly be a little better at how they give their critiques, but that's life. Not everyone we ever meet is going to be polite and courteous about our feelings. You either suck it up and deal with it or you walk away. The choice is always yours.

Besides...
