I DESPISE "viable"...

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

Funny story about viable actually...

A guy at the shop who play Imps used to harp on me because I'd run Jan and Kyle and Roark all the time, he'd say oh that HwK, I'm gonna shoot that first because it's easy money, I don't know why you play that.

Guy picks up MW... the next day he's got not one but TWO HwKs in his case.

Oh... why did you bring that buddy? I thought the HwK was easy money...

people are strange..

*whistles*

bad lists can win too. thats the beauty of the game.

Soontir Fel. King of the PTL Funny Face.

Still gets one shotted by a lot of stuff when his green dice implode.

Still King.

See where I'm going with this?

UNDERSTANDING IS POWER...

;)

"the sleeper has awakened.." so I guess coffee is power, too. :D

also: I like the word "viable". let's me say "it may not be the most effective way to spend these points, but there are way worse, so you should try it" so much faster.. ;)

:D:lol::)

you know, I've solo'd two defenders with a 14 point scyk

because dice said so.

it's not as beautiful as you put it.

I know, right?

Rhymer + EM + 2x Adv Homing Missiles + TIE MkII + PTL. 38 points. Viable? Everyone I've flown that against has had their ships running away screaming from it, and it has two shotted Ten Numb and one shotted Corran.

What does the rest of that squad with Rhymer look like? It seems like a blast! WOOOOOAH, PUN NOT INTENDEEEEEEEEEED!!!

For me, viable simply means "you aren't wasting your points taking this".

more importantly, "you aren't wasting your time if you are at all interested in winning"

some people aren't, some people are

"Not playing to win is like sleeping with your sister. Sure she's a great piece of tail, with a blouse full of goodies, but... it's just illegal."

In saying that, I take all manner of 'non viable" ships and have fun with them. I get trounced most of the time but that is more because I'm not that great of player and hardly ever play the same list twice.

I would still be interested in seeing ways of playing some of these ship more competitive.

Wow. That escalated quickly...

Brath + HLC + LW + TIE MkII 47 Points. Viable? I've never seen a large base ship with so many face up cards and a crying pilot (extra cool points if it's Chewie).

Deathrain + Adv Sens + EM + 2x Prox Mines + Experimental Interface 40 points. Viable? I can put those mines wherever I **** well please. Dumped one on Poe once through an asteroid and then barrel rolled to keep from running through the rock the next turn. It was GLORIOUS.

Warden Squadron + Adv SLAM + Bombadier + EM + 2x prox mines 34 points. Viable? I thought the last opponent I had 2 of these on the table against was going to punch me in the nose.

Full Disclosure: ALL of these ships are ridiculously fun to play.

Khirax + cluster missiles + Glit + Pred with Latts Razzi Viable? I'm still mad they nerfed this. I positively melted ships with this.

Run the ridiculous and grin the whole time.

I think I will take those 2 (bolded) to next tourney. Probably add Omega Leader to make it 100. It just looks so fun. Thank you for posting that.

We need a "politically correct redneck" meme here xD

Calling funplay "sleeping with one's sister" is a new approach to it

For me,

VIABLE

and

Run the ridiculous and grin the whole time.

Are synonymous. In other words, put me on Team Joe Boss Red Seven. :)

Can i sign up for that too? I'm a great believer in playing stuff thats fun and thematic even if you *know* you're going to be the underdog :)

You sure can... stow your stuff in bay 94.

:)

Couldn't agree more sir! "Viable", "competitive", "autowin/autolose" & "flies itself" annoy me no end. Play what you enjoy. If you lose, who cares, it's just a game. Surely the fun is playing not winning!

Thread not gone as expected. Kudos, FFG community!

The ridiculous builds can be bloody effective at times, and are usually hilarious with it. I remember seeing a 45-or-so point Kavil across the table from me at a recent tournament, loaded to the gills with everything from TLT to Proton Bombs to Engine Upgrade and more. I raised my eyebrows - that many points for a one agility, eight hit point ship?

By turn three I was running away from it, screaming.

Unless you go to a tournament. Then winning is (at least part of) the fun.

We have a meta where almost any ship is viable (except E-wing generics and Fel's wrath), often with different combinations (except for soontir, who has only one combination really).

So... maybe I am missing the greater point, but it's not that easy to make an underdog list anymore.

So what you're saying is - there is no meta, only Zuul?

You know what, sure.

If you aren't interested in winning, why are you even playing? Why not go do yoga or build a house for charity, or kick a puppy (I wanted to offer a Sith option...please don't kick puppies..)

Playing to Win doesn't mean being a nozzle. Actually, not playing to win is, in my opinion, unfair to your opponent. This isn't an RPG. You're not "telling a story". Build a solid list (even if it's with ships that are considered sub-optimal) and fly them as hard as you can.

Oh, and have fun!

Um... Narrative campaigns?

Sometimes, a mission dictates that you have to work with what you've got, not with what you want. So maybe as part of it you have more than one "flight" unable to share uniques. Or there are other concerns. You are still trying to win the campaign - but maybe you can't use whatever combo due to restrictions. Far more interesting and thought filled way to play in my opinion.

Of course, in the current meta even ordnance is good now, and we'll soon be seeing TIE Defenders again.

Winning isn't the priority for some. Not caring about winning is not the same as tossing the game. I like to test out different stuff, or potential combos in my weekly get ups, not going for the power combos.

Testing lists is a big one too. Where it's not winning, but it's the results.

God knows I am guilty of that (usually I win when I test though, hilariously enough - this isn't just in X-wing or 40K either, a ship I made in SWG became my calling card...)

Doesn't matter if other people think it's viable. Find the list that sings to you.

What if the list is singing "Dare to be Stupid"?

Change the channel!
Oh hell no. Weird Al RULES

Makes me wonder if there's a Viable Al.
