Star Wars Rebellion Preview Up!

By Cesamasec, in X-Wing

"We will look more closely at combat in future previews, but it is worth noting at this point that combat incorporates the game's more than 150 plastic miniatures along with both custom dice and tactic cards."

*heavy breathing*

We probably won't get any Xwing or Armada updates next week if they are doing a Rebellion preview every day.

Then, next week is Rebellion Week, and Rebel leaders are prepared to unveil five new previews!

:o

What is FFGs fascination with custom dice? It really closes them in, in terms of design space.

This is indeed, Rebellion the board game.

In order to sell you more dice or the dice app.

Engine25 likes this

For shame Engine25! It's a sad week when we don't get X-wing previews. :( Rebellion looks like it might be ok though.

(mostly kidding Engine, you can like what you want :))

So excited for this

Our boardgame night is in need of another game.

We've already played twilight emperium, civilization, firefly, xcom, dominion, legendary, city of horror, battle for middle earth, zombicide and few others to death. (though looking forward to ikusa soon haven't played that in awhile)

This cannot come out fast enough

Hope it plays well with 4 players says 2-4 players. We got the new star wars risk, and though nothing like risk at all, it felt best at 2!players.

It allows them to adjust the distribution of results without requiring reference to look-up tables, the way a lot of old-school Avalon Hill games did.

Not necessarily true. There's been plenty of weeks where everyday has previews and at least one us a different Star Wars game. Doesn't stop X-wing previews. I fully expect to see previews finished with the Jumpmaster next week.

doooooooooood this looks goooooooooood

I wish Xwing had done more with their dice.

I agree. I think they learnt from it. Look what they've done with Armada.

I think they could have different types of attack and defence dice depending on the weapon type and ship class type.

It wouldn't need to be unnecessarily complicated. Perhaps no more than three or four of each type.

They could have ordnance dice to open up that design space a bit more.

Whenever (if?) X-Wing 2.0 comes out in the future I'll be very surprised if they don't do this.

otherwise you end up with filthy TABLES with corresponding numeric results

SAGA doesn't. A lot of games don't.

There are two types of dice

dice with numbers

and dice with special icons on sides

you can't make anything but simplistic "win-fail-crit" without tables or custom dice

on topic: miniatures too small to be beautiful.

Right, but a six sided dice (as an example) has six "thresholds" for success, and allows for a wide range of modifiers. You can add or subtract dice, or add or subtract numbers TO the dice. Especially if you implement a two stage hit and damage process.

Will it be more suitable for two or four players i wonder?

Our gaming groups are already into Imperial assault skirmish and x-wing so theres no real interest and drive for another 2player game.

However, if it plays best with four, it could be interesting teamwork game against each other 2vs2

I don't remember where, but I remember an interview with one of the FFg designers somewhere, where they said that they did market research (unlike GW) and discovered that custom dice are very very popular. As has been mentioned, they eliminate the need for tables, reducing the the amount of memorization needed and complexity in the games. Also, in many of their games, though not X-Wing, the custom dice allow them to include multiple sets of symbols that give them multiple dimensions to base game effects off of. Both Imperial Assault and the SW RPGs, for example, have basic damage/defense based on one set of symbols, and the triggering of special abilities on a different set, and by varying the ratios of these symbols on the different colors/size of the dice it gives them immense flexibility in adjusting game powers.

Its really too bad that they didn't incorporate that concept into X-Wing. I think it would have been pretty cool if attack dice generated basic damage, but also (to use Imperial Assault terminology) could generate "surges" that could trigger special abilities effects of pilots or upgrades. I can easily imagine the design flexibility that would be allowed to secondary weapons if they could trigger additional effects based on a resource other than damage/hitting.

There is a third kind of dice:

Dice where all sides are blank; like my green X-Wing dice!

This is one of those games I want, very much, but where I have to consider if I'd ever get it to the table.

Might even be one of those games where I'll just say 'frag it' and buy it regardless.

Things like this make me question why.

Why?

WHY DID I GET MARRIED AND HAVE CHILDREN, how am I going to afford this now!?!?

**** you cruel world!!!!

How many players?

How many players?

2-4 according to the article.
