A little food for thought

By TimMurrayJR, in X-Wing

I come from a games workshop background as im sure a lot of you do. I feel a lot of use gave up on GW because their games where broken and we had to spend a small or medium sized fortune to stay competitive. Even when we did spend that fortune if you where playing the wrong kind of army you got your head kicked in anyway because GWs power creep has been unmatched in my experience.

Then i found FFG. i find there to be very little if anything in this game that is OP, broken, or unfair. i find the fact that one FFG does a good job making it to where wining this game is not based on the amount of money you spend awesome. That no list is an insta win or insta lose means their is a large array of lists you get to see at a tournament is great.

On net listing.Yes people net list but congrats we live in a digital age and people do that from table top to CCGs to video games its just a thing that happens.

My main point and the reason i am making this post.

In the end tho winning and losing this game i have found comes down to flying. I can look back on every tournament and casual game i have played and say that my ability to fly my list better than my opponent flew theirs or viseaversa is what has been a consistent factor in my winning and losing. I say all this to point out FFG has made a really awesome freaking game for all of us so stop freaking crying about this one ship that makes it so hard for you to win. We win we lose we learn and we get the heck over it. The key factor in any game should be having fun winning and the swag is just a kool bonus for doing a good job and playing the game well. If you can't figure out how to beat a particular opponent or list ask the guy/gal you just played for advice. People in this community are some of the best gamer's i have found when it comes to being helpful polite and good sports. Basically its not the game its you and maybe your really good maybe your the next Heaver but he did not get to be a 3peat by crying he got there with a crap ton of prep and practice and talking with and playing other skilled players. I seriously tire of the consistent X thing is broken it needs the Nerf bat or we should just make this card that will fix this problem while cause 12 other problems but it will make me unbeatable. Folks if your having a hard time reflect on you first asses how you played and look for your flaws as well as ask your opponents what you could have done better and what you did well. It helps and it beats the pants off pointing fingers at particular builds and crying foul which generally speaking does nothing to help you.

Well that concludes my rant i hope you all have a great day and fly casual .

This game has its broken stuff, but as yet it cannot achieve the levels of imbalance that 20-years of continuous new releases and innumerable factions that GW has enabled.

The recent update to Large ship MOV can be seen as evidence that there was an imbalance in tournaments prior to this (Fat Hans, etc. scoring problems).

I'm one who looks at the Twin Laser Turret and thinks that it is probably the first truly 'imbalanced' card in the game. I also see the problem of continuous new releases creating a case of "the rich get richer". If you want to keep up with the Joneses, you need to buy the Huge ships and the Large ships to have access to a variety of upgrade cards and pilots.

The tournament scene is very much like the tournament scene for Games Workshop games except there is no scoring for sportsmanship or painting as GW had (those will be missed categories).

But so far, yeah, not as bad as GW. All games suffer from 'codex creep' eventually.

It's in FFG's interests to keep the game balanced and cheap to get into. I wouldn't be surprised if we see starter box type releases.

Balence is real good in this game nothing tilts balence for long. phantom, fat turrets, and tlts get to shine but options appear to counter them while keeping them viable.

I have played Infinity form some time. There was a saying." It's not your list. It's you.". It means it's not that important what's on your squad list but what you can do with it. I see that more fitting to X-Wing then to Infinity to be honest...

I don't know, I've definitely seen people make things work that wouldn't fit my play style in Infinity, and consequently I wouldn't be as good with.

Also, Nomads 4 Lyfe

Some things are broken like the tie advanced, something's are just a shock people arnt prepared for like the phantom.

I think the TLT is a tad too strong I've killed a four ship list just using kavil marksmanship and unhinged astro.

The devs don't just take our word for it but if enough people are in agreement clearly there's an issue worth looking into.

GW just does not care even a little their only motivation is making enough money to pay shareholders dividends which is why things no longer get erretas or faqs in 40k and they threw all pretence of balance away with aos.

I pretty much totally agree with the OP. The most broken thing X-wing has ever had, the Phantom, is maybe a 2 out of 10 on the GW scale of brokenness. The Phantom was broken because it forced you to take certain hard counters. In GW world, your army might not even have a counter to a broken unit, and your opponent wouldn't even have to play it that well.

And FFG said "Oh crap, we'd better fix that" and found a way to tone it down without neutering it. Brought it in balance beautifully, I thought. Their solution showed a lot of skull sweat.

I'm very glad the TIE Advanced got fixed! And done in a way that doesn't create power creep.

And TLT, yeah. That's a touch over powered. Not a great deal. It's probably worth 7 points, but it only costs 6. That's not bad, honestly. Guidance Chimps may well see the dawn of the Torpedo Era, which would tend to melt Y-Wings right down.

And to the main point: I know that I build good lists. But I also know that every one of my losses has come because of my own bad flying. That's where theorycrafting has to earn its points.

TLTs might be a bit overpowered as a card but they are only allowed on ships that have low agility (Y-Wings, HWK-290's K-Wings). If you plan it right, you can take them out of the fight with little or some difficulty. Plus, it has a donut hole at Range 1 so you are still able to arc dodge it. They are powerful, but certainly not unbeatable. FFG has done a terrific job in making a game that is playable but complex. Some mistakes were made, as mentioned in previous posts, but FFG listened to what people were saying and they took the time to find a solution to those problems.

Well said Tim.

X-Wing success is probably 70% player skill, 20% squad composition, and 10% luck1. If you happen to get a match up that is your squad's kryptonite things will probably skew towards squad composition being more important.
