I love the artwork, but having played on the first star field one at an event, they are SO slippy.

Depends, did you select Hyperspace assault for your objective?

I have washers on all mine and use the FFG maps, the slipperiness has never been a problem for me. Seem to actually have the opposite problem on most mats with some kind of rubber, my ships actually stick and have to be pulled off. Which moves the mat. Happens a lot if vinyl.

I really like the look of them, but based on watching Youtube battle reports with visually busy mats, they do seem like more of a hindrance to actually playing. Does it get better (or less problematic) in person?

They're not bad to play on, visually. They're (of course) still slippery, which makes them a no-go for me, and they have the same rounded corners (or at least the ones awarded at Worlds do), which technically makes them illegal for competitive play!

These mats really aren't visualy buisy, I have one that is much worse, a hyper-dense, realistic starfield. Had to get a new one with a calm blue planet and the ususal white dot stars, so much better. I still keep the other one in case of epic, of course.
