The rule book is unclear regarding damage from obstacles like debris fields and asteroids. Do they:

a. cause a damage card to be dealt to the ship, ignoring shields?

or

b. cause a damage card that can be blocked by shields? Can a Redirect token be used?

Asteroid:

The ship receives a face-up damage card. Shields, hull zones, defense tokens, evade dice, saving throws, etc., don't matter.

Debris field:

Suffer two damage to any hull zone. The damage can be blocked by shields. You cannot use a redirect token, but generally that wouldn't matter since you get to choose which hull zone suffers the damage.

It is important to realise that Defense Tokens can only be used against attacks ... The Damage directly dealt by Rules is not an attack unless it says specifically so...

And the redirect distinction is important, because the Debris Field is TWO DAMAGE to a Single Hull Zone... If you were able to Redirect, you could put One damage on each of Two zones...
