A chemical in search of a despair. . . .

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Not really Star Wars, but man oh man am as a Evil GM am I ever trying to figure out a use for this: Chlorine Trifluoride, and I thought I'd share.

Pretty nasty. I don't think even game mechanics would survive contact. This would be one of those "no way out" scenarios I try to avoid in my games. The PCs would need to have the time to flee, not get caught in a "Blast", and make all their Athletic checks to simply not die, as it's fatal on contact. All the Resilience in the world won't help. I bet it eats stimpacks for snacks and drinks bacta for refreshment...

If you toned it down but retained the nasty flavour, at the least it would lead to Characteristic loss.

Jeez, did somebody forget to bring snacks last session Desslok? Spill some pop on your CRB? That is incredibly horrifying stuff.

EDIT: Huh, I was hoping my 100th post would be more insightful than that. Oh well.

Reminds me of this:

“There’s no material safety data sheet for astatine. If there were, it would just be the word “NO” scrawled over and over in charred blood.”

Containment with Star Wars level of technology would probably be pretty easy. Generate a repulsorfield electro-static bubble of Handwavium and call it good. But thinking about it, the best usage of this stuff (or a similar chemical) would be as set dressing!

Consider this - the characters are sneaking into a base, they're surrounded by vats and vats, the Brain of the group gets a look at the side of one of the vats and goes "Um, guys? We really don't want to get into a firefight in here. . . ."

Or as a MacGuffin - an imperial not quite important enough to be able to command a fleet or build a Death Star wants to make a name for himself by dumping a bunch of this on a planet somewhere. Now the players have to very carefully blow up the facility.

Remember kids, always bribe the GM! :)
Also, I know the feeling. I just wasted my 3,000th post on this. Ah well - who remembers milestones anyway!

I bought myself that book as a Christmas gift.

EDIT:

And on the topic of THIS chemical... the Wikipedia entry has this listed in it's "hazards" column... "explosive when exposed to organics" which gives me the horrifying and hilarious mental image.

I did last year, and then this year someone got me Thing Explainer.
