StarViper Build Help

By JackDupp, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello,

I am fairly new to X-wing. I have been playing well with a Deci and Phantom build that seems to suit my play style. One tank and one flanking fighter.

Problem is I really like scum and am unable get the right build fit. I was able to play a few games trying Bossk and Guri to no wins. I am going to play again soon and have two builds in mind.

First.

StarViper: · Prince Xizor (31)

Predator (3)

Autothrusters (2)

· Virago (1)

Fire Control System (2)

Inertial Dampeners (1)

YV-666: · Bossk (35)

Calculation (1)

Homing Missiles (5)

Engine Upgrade (4)

Outlaw Tech (2)

Gunner (5)

Mercenary Copilot (2)

· Hound's Tooth (6)

-- TOTAL ------- 100/100p. --

Second.

StarViper: · Prince Xizor (31)

Predator (3)

Autothrusters (2)

· Virago (1)

Fire Control System (2)

YV-666: · Bossk (35)

Calculation (1)

Kihraxz Fighter: Black Sun Ace (23)

· Bodyguard (2)

-- TOTAL ------- 100/100p. --

I think they speak for themself

Any suggestions to these would be grateful

Any changes and uselessness aswell.

Thank you.

My experience has been that if you aren't giving Xizor VI or using his ability, Guri is the better pilot to use. What are you looking to get out of him vs. Guri?

In your first build, Boosk is to heavy, and in your second, to light. The YV-666 really needs action economy, and as such the K4 Droid is awesome. Outlaw Tech is fine also.

I like to keep my Boosk cheap-ish with a Mangler Cannon and a K4 - and if I have the points - Outlaw Tech. Engine Upgrade is a decent one for the YV-666, but I find that slow rolling it - and a turn of full stop if needed - is a better way to go. That being said, if you play fast and lose and have an aggressive playstyle, the Engine Upgrade might suit you, but I never use it 'cause: they see me rollin', they hatin'.

I like the second Xizor better, but find that when I play with FCS over Advanced Sensors I almost always ends up regretting it, especially in combination with Predator, since you can't re-roll a re-roll so having both of them is in my opinion kind of 'meh'.

If you want to go with Xizor - and not Guri as someone mentioned earlier - two z-95 might serve you better then a single Kihraxzesxvzx, as they play to Xizors ability while retaining the Bodyguard-esque role of the KIhraxzeszxvhiz.

I often find myself looking to Guri when flying StarVipers, her ability is so good, and while she suffers a bit with PS5 I rarely have cause to regret including her in a squad. Fun ability, fun ship to fly (you'll wish for more green!) and snazzy looking to boot. What's not to like?

First of all, you should not be putting FCS and predator on the same ship. The both have very similar abilities, so its not very efficient (allowing you to re-roll attack dice).

Here are two ways to build Xizor that I think would work much better for you:

-Veteran instincts, virago, FCS & autothrusters = 37

-predator, virago, advanced sensors & autothrusters = 40

Now we need to give him some buds to fly with. The problem with Bossk is that he's too obviously the first target. Your opponent will always try to kill him first, and with focus fire, can do so quite quickly. Since Xizor's ability encourages opponents to ignore Xizor and shoot his wingmates, I don't think Bossk makes a lot of sense to go alongside Xizor.

The most common team for Xizor is 5 binayre pirates (60 pts). They are great mooks to pass damage to and you can use them to block enemies and try to maximize range 1 shots.

Another option is 3 cartel marauders. Its not as good as 5 pirates, but has a bit better firepower at longer ranges.

A third option would be to use some thugs. Here are two ways of going about it:

1 binayre pirate = 12

2 thugs w/ BTL-A4, ion turret + R4 agromechs = 25 x 2

Xizor w/ VI, virago, FCS + autothrusters = 37

99

Or,

1 binayre pirate = 12

2 thugs w/ twin laser turrets = 24 x 2

Xizor w/ predator, virago, advanced sensors & autothrusters = 40

100

Lastly, here's a recent thread that suggests teaming up Xizor with Boba Fett: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/199025-boba-and-xizor/

Hopefully that gives you some ideas!

I have flown both Xizor and Guri; together and seperately. I prefer Guri over Xizor for her ability. If you are going to use Xizor and have an "escort" with him, use the Z-95. It's cheaper and it has a 1 straight where the Kihraxz does not. The Z does a better job of sticking with X, and losing the Z does not hurt as much as losing the K.

Definitely Guri works better for me. Xizor is ok, but he limits your list, you have to build around him to trigger his ability and you don't want to punish your valuable ships, so... z95 or y-wing for Xizor.

Guri pairs very well with Cobra, Boba or YV-666, her ability is amazing. If you load her with AT and Sensor Jammer is a big pain in the **ss. Normally, your opponent should focus on a bigger thread (like YV-666), but she is the real killer!

I also prefer Guri. I find she really pulls weight, especially in the end game. I've had her seal the deal against a double pancake list.

If you can keep Xizor alive to the end game, I think he would do well. I feel he needs more beefcaking than Guri, who in my humble opinion, works best flown relatively cheaply (lone wolf and AT).

The list below might be cool to try. I like the make up. Pair Xizor with the Z and have the Y's follow up. Try to keep at R3 and use the Y's to take osmething out, then zoom in with Xizor and his wing man (flying HP), and try to close the deal. Predator and Adv sensors is a powerful combo with a StarViper. Getting focus, s looping, then using predator can be a big surprise. Don't underestimate those S Loops.

I really like this: 1 binayre pirate = 12

2 thugs w/ twin laser turrets = 24 x 2

Xizor w/ predator, virago, advanced sensors & autothrusters = 40
