Hyperspace Tugboats?

By Amoeba Bait, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

G'day guys,

I was wondering if you knew anything about hauling stuff through hypserpace; and I'm talking BIG things through hyperspace.

My PCs have a small spacestation that they're based out of, and I'm thinking about giving them the option to build on their station to make it bigger (add more rooms etc.).

I imagine it to be a modular design, (similar to the ISS) where you can have a prefab room/section, and attatch it.

However, the Space Station itself doesn't have a hyperdrive, so I'm wondering if there are Hyperspace 'Tugboats' per-se, for hauling things like space stations and other large orbital objects around.

tl;dr: Have you seen anything (EU or otherwise) that is a ship capable of dragging large objects, ships, or orbital platforms through hyperspace.

Cheers

There's a hyperspace capable tug in the AoR GM kit game, Dead in the Water. The PCs are given the option of using it to haul cago containers to their destination (I'll not go into any more detail than that, to avoid spoilers). There isn't a stat block given, though.

Fantastic! It shouldn't be too difficult (nor important) to stat up.

I'll check it out.

Thank you!

Never seen an example in canon, but it's one of those things that you more or less has to conclude would exist. Although if it were too cheap, that would harm local industries. I'd just stat something up with a maximum Sil. size it can move, make it fairly rare (I'd imagine big industries like Correllia's would have them for specialist purposes) and give it a fairly slow hyperdrive.

I'd say a hyperspace docking ring is an example for what you're locking at, but you said you needed bigger.

My Ideas:

  1. One could detach the segments and use a big freighter (Temple Class or the likes)
  2. Maybe dock one or two big ships and let them jump together, routing the control to the bridge of the station?
  3. Or several smaller ships, controlled via the same route
  4. Install several "modular hyperspace engines" along the way
  5. or simply find the needed engine. The friggen deathstar had hyperspace capabilities, so it's possible for sure, but I understand reluctance to giving players a Hyperspace capable station.

I'd personally go with 2. or 3., which could be an adventure on its own, there is so much that can go wrong, and it's also the worst possible time for a saboteur or other mishaps ;)

Or to keep it in-universe, look up the WEG module "Black Ice". :-)

I doubt very much the Empire would want to build every battle station in place, so I am thinking that's a pretty easy one to just say exists.

That's definitely a very Imperial way to go about it. I was thinking more along the lines of a GR-75 with it's preloaded cargo pods, mechanically... though visually, I'm thinking something with a cramped, relatively tiny cabin/crew area, massive hyperdrive engines, and heavy-duty towing clamps. For longer cargo trains, maybe 'booster' generators every so many cars, slaved to the primary system. No particular in-universe vessel comes to mind, but it IS a big galaxy, after all.

I've used Action IVs and Temples with "Capital" Tractor Beams in their hard points. Basically one step up from Heavy.

Isu-Sim ( http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Isu-Sim/Legends ) is also a manufacturer for station-level Hyperspace drives.

Legends/EU material wasn't all bad. There was at least one instance of a Star Destroyer tractoring a ship to big to fit in it's hanger, and still managed to bring the ship to another system light years away. I'd say anything with high-end capital ship tractor beams can probably tug something along through hyperspace. You'll probably want multiple tractor beams on the target. It'd be pretty bad to lose power to the only tractor beam while enroute!
