New Owner, Love the Game! Question Concerning Minature Bases

By WeAreLegion, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi all! First post, new owner who is an old school vet of HeroQuest and Warhammer Quest. (I still have both complete and playable)

Simple question: the sculpts of the miniatures are great but many of them, almost all of the larger ones, have had defects in their bases. Simply put they are not flat, usually bowed a bit and one was straight up bent. Good news is I discovered a way to fix them (and the few that had their actual figure bent at the feet, putting them at an odd angle, or a body part all twisted).

I was wondering if this is a common thing or am I just cursed? Every set I have purchased, except for two human-sized lieutenants, had figures with bases I had to fix.

Am I alone?

Beyond that, amazing product it and production. Love it!!

This is somewhat common. I have almost all the Descent and Star Wars IA minis and a few have some type of warping or another. Heat sources work best to fix this, like hot water or even small flame, but it sounds like you already figured it out. Overall, though the minis are generally pretty good in quality and require little work. Some of the best minis out there.

I absolutely agree! And yes, I found an amazing solution to the warped base issue...actually surprised it works so well! Next time I get a figure with issues I'll take before and after pics.

Thanks for the reply. :)

May I ask what your solution was? I too had this problem and contemplated submerging the base for short incriments in boiling water until it wanted to flex back.

I'm assuming he's referring to the old "hot water/cold water" trick, which is a fairly common and effective means to reposition minis made with this sort of soft plastic.

Basically, submerge the affected portion of the mini is hot or boiling water for a few seconds, until it becomes soft and pliable. Then bend it back into the shape you want, and immediately submerge in cold water to harden it up in that shape.

In the case of bases specifically, it helps to use bowls of water with nice, flat bottoms, so you can just press them down in the bowl firmly.
