Imperial Class Decks for Return to Hoth

By Boba Rick, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

What are your thoughts? I like both of them, neither one of them seems to be UN-fun for the Rebels (like Subversive Tactics). I don't think either one is OP, or could be considered "the best" or "the worst."

My thoughts are if you're playing against 4 heroes and like droids, use Armored Onslaught. If you're playing against less than that (in my case I'm going against two) then run Precision Training.

I fliped through my copy and i found i like precision training a lot more. i hate spending threat on class cards though, however i do know of cards that increase threat so ill be fine.

I think armored onslaught seems fun (haven't gotten around to a full campaign with it yet) but you'd likely have to own most components so far to really enjoy it.

*weak spoilers*

I really loved Armored Onslaught. We just finished RTH a week ago and now we're started our next campaign and I already miss mortar (Though, my Rebels don't). I think this deck really changes how you play as IP, which I really like. In this case, you'll find yourself dealing a lot more splash damage and then you can pick on whomever you want at the time.

All in all, I think it's a pretty balanced deck. Explosive munitions is a very good starting card, especially when coupled with the right deployment cards, like Heavy troopers where you are adding blast to more blast and they have an automatic accuracy buff. But, it's not an attachment, which means it's very versatile.

I bee-lined straight for Mortar, which is the gem of the deck. It's just sooooo fun to do this every round, especially on the mission entry. The only bad thing is that if your Rebels win Leia, then you can expect them to Exhaust this card first. She may have attracted the attention of my tank once or twice as a result.

I also purchased Power to Shields , which I used at against cleave most often but if you are playing against a rebel with Blast (i.e. Fenn) then this is a must buy. I thought it was pretty good, it got use almost every round, but I rarely paid threat to re-ready it. I figured it probably kept my troopers alive for an extra round more often than not.

Reactive Armor was really nice on the tank and AT-ST, which is why you play this deck in the first place. I was surprised how much damage I was able to deal with the tank in a few missions.

Towards the end I purchased Automated repairs and H eavy firepower both of which were nice additions.

Armored corps and Explosive Entry seemed to situational for my taste. Also, I didn't want to spend threat with Rapid dominance but I can see the appeal.

All in all. I really had fun with this deck and it changed the dynamic of the game. Which is great.

One last thing (based on advice from Jeppe in the Boardwars.eu podcast) I added the Bombardment agenda deck and saved 2 influence for the first time that I could get the card that allows for "deplete when deploying a vehicle to reduce the cost by 3 threat". I used this almost every mission, either for the tank (for 7 threat) or AT-ST (for 11 threat). I admit the AT-ST can be a little limited tactically, but it's so fun:)

The other deck in RTH looks good. It is very safe, in that, it basically builds consistency into your rolls and actions. Personally, I liked the less predictable, more exciting, blow-stuff-up deck.

This sums it up well. I played the Precision Training deck for a core campaign recently. It is very consistent, to the point that it's a little boring. I'm planning to use Armored Onslaught when we do RtH.

As for how I played it:

I went straight for Find the Weakness . A Pierce 1 on all my attacks really adds up over the course of a mission and I can't tell you the number of times it made the difference between needing to use a single surge to deal damage and getting 1 damage through to use that surge to deal a condition.

After I bought FtW the next mission was Communication Breakdown. As they only had 1 white die hero I decided that I was buying a 1XP card next, which one depended on the outcome of that mission (Leia adding another white to their defense). Well they lost, so I went with Sharpshooters . It made Heavy Troopers extremely useful and Weiss himself absolutely vicious.

I don't recall the order, but I picked up Versatile Attack and Exacting Strike. I know most people don't like to use threat for their class cards, but they frequently allowed me to lay large amounts of damage on the Heroes and spike damage to get a wound.

Last I got Assassins . It really wasn't in an impressive card, but I didn't really have a lot of time to explore it. The starter card, Strike Force , already gives a reroll and Stormtroopers get one inherently. Being able to ignore figures for LOS rarely mattered. I kind of wished I had bought Knowledge of Attack and Pinpoint Accuracy instead.
